DETROIT, MI - Dr. Benjamin Carson, a potential presidential candidate, has plans to return to his hometown of Detroit.

Carson, a world renowned neurosurgeon, is scheduled to speak April 11 for Covenant Community Care's fundraiser, "Courage to Care: Inspiring Tomorrow's Heroes."

The event will be held at Detroit's Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 2080 W. Grand Blvd.

Admission, according to a Detroit News event listing, is $50. For more information call (313) 228-0290.

Carson recently gave a viral speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. that put him in the national spotlight.

Several media outlets have speculation that he could end up being the Republican party's candidate for president in the 2016 election.

Carson, however, hasn't confirmed or denied he's interested in running for president in 2016.

Carson, 61, is a Detroit Southwestern High School and University of Michigan graduate who was raised by a single mother and reportedly struggled early in school.

He's currently a neurosurgeon and the director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President George W. Bush in 2008.

A movie about Carson's life called "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" was shot in Metro Detroit and released by TNT in 2009. Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. played the role of Carson in the film. The film was reportedly six years in the making before its release.

You can see in the video below that Carson speaks out on a variety of topics including political correctness, health care and taxes. He told ABC News that he didn't think his speech was particularly political but added that he'll leave a potential run for president in 2016 "up to God."

I am so sick of the “giving back” line. He has been an asset from the start and continues to be. The parasites are the ones who need to give back.

I will not stand by and watch this great country destroy itself under mediocre leadership that drifts from one crisis to the next, eroding our national will and purpose. We have come together here because the American people deserve better from those to whom they entrust our nation's highest offices, and we stand united -- we stand united in our resolve to do something about it.

“He’s currently a neurosurgeon and the director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President George W. Bush in 2008.”

This is like calling Michelangelo a housepainter.

Dr. Carson is the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, the premier hospital in the world for pediatric neurosurgery, and the #1 or #2-ranked hospital in the United States for the last couple of decades.

Dr. Carson is the top innovator in the field over the past few decades. More than being a brilliant surgeon, he has proved to be an outstanding teacher and leader, having assembled a world-class team of pediatric neurosurgeons at Johns Hopkins, each of whom could be the top dog in pediatric neurosurgery at any other hospital in the world.

This is why I think its so important for him to take his message to Detroit where he’s already a true hero. Virtually every schoolroom in Detroit has a photo of Ben Carson on the wall. There is even a Doctor Ben Carson school of science and medicine in Detroit.

Others may want to give blacks an elbow to the face but Ben Carson is smart enough to know that its exactly what Obama wants.

There is still a HUGE amount of Detroiters who will throw him under the DOT Bus. The ones screaming about the EFM, which include city council, religious, people blocking the freeway. They still refuse to take responsibility for the poor condition of Detroit.

I think democrat ability in regards to Ben Carson is being wildly overstated just like the Detroit rioting predicted by FReepers at least 4 times per year.

You have the same small group of rabble rousers who raise a little hell over things but nothing serious.

I don't mean to be rude, but I want the Conyers, KilPatrick Clans and any other malcontents you can think of to give back all the money they stole from Detroit's they can never give back their dignity which they took as well.

That is the give back I want to see, Dr Carson has given back in so many ways, his duty is done, and well done at that...

Ben Carson is doing what he believes is morally right. Besides all he’s giving is inspiration and you people act as if something is being taken from you.

Its really sad how easily FReepers can be manipulated into being exactly what he and the other race baiters want them to be.

No I don’t more taken from him, as they will continue to try to destroy him. I give him credit for stepping into the breech. If you think I am being manipulated so be it, I am worn out from 5 years of watching America turning into a socialist craphole and if the good Dr wanted to go Galt and drop off the radar I am so fine with that it ain’t funny. I think it is time for me to leave FR for good, as I am jaded by what the likes of all the malcontent politician’s who are all now doing time that destroyed Detwaa IMHO haven’t paid enough for their sins. And the worse part of it is their are probably tons more that haven’t or won’t get their justice for the crimes. I am greatful the Doc’ wants to give back, I just think he as given enough with all the lives he has saved.

Absolutely correct.

The only people who should be giving back are the ones that have lived off the Taxpayers and made something of themselves after being helped through a tough time.

Remember the line that Liberal Politicians love to use, people want a hand up, not a handout.

Nowadays that’s pure BS. They’re Addicts and the Democrats are the Dealers. The Dealers are paid in Votes.

I’m sure Obama and the democrats appreciate your help in telling the inner city to stay on the plantation.

Your damage is indistinguishable from theirs.

Carson, however, hasn't confirmed or denied he's interested in running for president in 2016.

After the Herman Caine debacle, I would want Carson to first win a high (Senator or Gov) contested seat and see what the Democrat smear machine will throw at him. Senator Levin of Michigan is retiring, leaving his seat open for 2014.

I agree. There are some issues on which I disagree with Carson on but I don’t believe he would try to legislate them against the wishes of the people.

And despite the ironically blind lock step thinking of many FReepers, I think he would get considerable support from Detroit in a senate race.
