MESQUITE, Nev. Five members of a Southern California family were killed Saturday when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
The dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two -- the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy -- were hospitalized in critical condition.
Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seatbelts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

Drunks rarely die in these situations.
Defense Attorney: "So as you can clearly see, the problem here is not that my client was drunk or texting, but rather the deceased failed to wear safety belts."
The Perp...

I sense a bit of sarcasm here /s
If we had GIVEN him a DL, he would have purchased insurance and also not been drinking because he was underage.
When we FORCE them to drive without a license, they just say the hell with it as to insurance AND we are making them break the law.
Don’t mention the fact that being here illegally is breaking the law, it is not the same as breaking the law like robbing a bank or driving without a license.
The quicker WE understand this, the better off we will be????

Good News if True! Texas has a law that you must have at least liability insurance so people get it for the month when their license and inspection are due and then promptly cancel it. Texas is not known for making use of electronic record keeping so no one ever checks to make sure that the insurance is still in effect after that initial month.
In the meantime, some of us who do carry insurance to cover accidents caused by the “uninsured” have seen our rates go through the roof. Texas citizens would be well served to see this process automated and if someone’s insurance lapses, their car should be impounded until they pony up. Would theoretically result in rates going down for everyone although I have yet to see any insurance rates go down, even in Texas.
LA Times is already calling the perp a teeeeeeeenager....
First sign that they know he’s “undocuuuuuuumented”

Not completely accurate. If liability insurance is cancelled, the insurance carrier reports that to the State of Texas and the info is available to all LEOs when they run a license plate check on their computers.
In theory, a person could drive 11 months with no liability insurance... as long as he did nothing (as little as a tail light not working) to cause a cop to pull him over.
