Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, is facing pressure from fellow Republicans to drop his opposition to accepting billions of dollars in federal funds under the “Obamacare” reforms and extend health insurance to 1.5m of the state’s poorest citizens.

Mr Perry, a failed presidential candidate who has not ruled out running again in 2016, is on Monday expected to defend his decision to opt-out of a broad expansion of Medicaid, the government healthcare programme for the poor.

But that position is being challenged not only by public interest groups and the hospital industry, but by some Republicans in the state legislature. These lawmakers want to begin negotiations with the Obama administration to expand and privatise Medicaid in a way that could be acceptable to both conservatives and the US president.

According to an analysis by the state’s former budget estimator, expanding Medicaid would cost Texas $15bn over 10 years, but would open the door to $100bn in new federal funds over that period.

No, because it’s typical of a pea brain who can’t think or write. In other words is stupid and have to be told what to do.

Abbott hates the Tea Party. He lost to Cruz.

Are you, perhaps, confusing Att. Gen Abbott with Lt. Gov. Dewhurst?

Wow. I suspect you need either to sober up and/or get your facts straight.

Apparently, you are unable to distinguish between David Dewhurst and Greg Abbott?

DEWHURST lost to Cruz, not Abbott!

Dewhurst will likely say/do anything to get elected.

Abbott has a spine of steel (even if he is confined to a wheelchair).

I have heard both of them talk live and in person and have also met Abbott.

Please do not confuse our non-Texas readers by saying bad things about Abbott.

I am very pleased that Cruz defeated Dewhurst — as are most conservative Texans.

Abbott is as good a man as I have ever encountered in public office.

Well, if this isn’t a kettle of fish. Did some checking on the net. Zerwas has a rather strange shaped district, much of which is in Fort Bend County although his district does include a small area of Houston. Significant Hispanic and Black population in places like Four Corners, Mission Bend and Rosenberg.

He also serves on the Human Services Committee which is chaired by Raymond Pena Richard, a Democrat from Laredo who was reappointed to this position by our RINO-3 friend Strauss. Human Services Committee works with Texas HHSC which currently has a $16 BILLION budget and 9300 employees.

Looks like it’s time to rally the troops and start a fax and phone marathon to Mr. Zerwas.

My message to Gov Perry:

Governor Perry:

I wish to thank you for your opposition to accepting Washington’s offered “$Billions” to expand Obamacare to Texans.

Several Republican Governors (Kasich of Ohio, etc) have already caved to pressure on this issue.

I am asking you to stand strong alongside such brave governors as Scott Walker, of Wisconsin, and resist this form of Federal “bribery.”

I also ask you to resist the arguments of RINO TX State Rep John Zerwas to cave.

If Zerwas’s proposal to “deal” with the Obama Administration regarding this matter passes in the State Legislature, I ask you promptly to veto it.

Putting it another way: I see no reason ever to vote for any politician — for any office — who would compromise his principles on something this important.

Please stand strong: Principle counts — far more than being “popular.”

Thank you.

Very respectfully,

. . . .

I believe you are confusing Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott with Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. Mr. Abbott's record is pretty spotless from the Conservative point of view.

“pressure from fellow Republicans”

What’s the point? Why bother having a Republican party? There is no difference from Dems apart from their rhetoric.

I would hope you are not from Texas. Abbott is an awesome Attorney General. Dewhurst lost to Cruz.

Greg Abbott is nothing more than a kiss ass. He will say anything and do anything to get elected. I don’t know where you got that Don’t Tread pict, but it’s total fabrication. Abbott hates the Tea Party. He lost to Cruz.

Ummm.... I believe you’re thinking of Dewhurst.

Abbott is the TX AG and has done a great job in fighting for Conservative values and States’ Rights.

I seldom check where fellow freepers are from...but your home page says CALIFORNIA!!

That made me laugh out loud.

Maybe worrying about Texas and Gov Perry shouldn’t be your first concern.

So, tell me..how is Moonbeam workin’ out for ya? :)

You’re welcome. But kudos need to go to Jane - she was the one who started all of this by giving me a name.

I’m live in an area adjacent to Sugar Land but I’ve never heard of Zerwas nor do I recall seeing any of his election signs during my frequent trips over there during election time. Just too many people running for too many positions all at once and I thought election in Texas would never be finished last year.

Thought maybe Strauss would have somebody running against him this term for head honcho but no such luck.

Might want to look at my response to Jane who gave me a name to run down. Don’t know if there are others involved yet or not. Should know more in next day or two. But the real push is coming from the Democrats in border towns.

Texas is going to be so SOL if that amnesty goes through that more money for free healthcare may not be the number one issue because there won’t be money for anything.

I believe he is also a very successful Governor of a large state.

How successful could he be? He failed to get the "Trans Texas Corridor" built, after he already promised the job to France.

If you don't know what the TTC was, look it up and report back how conservative that was.
