Oldest Person in United States Dies at 113 Years Old in Clearwater

Indeed. I wouldn’t want to be the oldest person alive, mostly because I didn’t budget for it. ;>)

Strangely, while I do want to live, the closer I get to the end, I find myself accepting the inevitable, and I find comfort and peace with the knowledge of what is coming.

Sometimes I awake at night with a terrible fright that I might not at last acheive my lifelong dream of wrestling away the crown from the current titleholder. The suspense is killing me. It happened again tonight whilst I was minding me own slumber. This golden hope I have worked so hard for, and sacrificed not a few promising upstarts along the race, promises incontinent glory with a lifetime supply of depends. I shall prevail in the end.

Depending on the age of the next “oldest person”, we may have seen the last American to have lived in 3 different centuries. This one was born in 1899.

Darn. I am sad to see that link to history pass away.

And....my aunt turns 103 this month. She still lives on her own & uses the internet. Her physical & mental health are still excellent.

That is just... cool, friend. Especially since she isn't apparently saddled with chronic pain, etc.

I have a question for each of her years.

Since it seems to have become easier for the CDC, or whomever, to keep track of the national record-keeper, and we're been receiving timely announcements of their passing (sometimes also of their successor, within the same week) I've noted that a majority of them seem to make it into the early part of their twelfth decade.

Could be my imagination.

And you know you are personally getting older when you have less questions personally you'd like to have had an opportunity to ask, such as the nature of their first experience with radio or flying machines, etc.

Now I think it would be more interesting to hear about the changes in the social and culture fronts, about the besieged extended family... that sort of thing.

According to Wikipedia’s “List of living supercentenarians”, there are 10 people in the world still alive who were born in the 1800s.

The 15th-oldest, who was born the day before President McKinley died, is James McCoubrey, an immigrant who was born in Newfoundland (which did not become part of Canada until he was 48 years old).

What is the Japanese secret? Green tea? Sushi? Sake? Kobe beef? Taking lots of baths?

The list consists entirely of people from Japan, the U.S., and Europe, as well as one person from Barbados. I suspect this may be because these regions keep much more complete records than the rest of the world. You would think that China, just by virtue of sheer numbers, would have a few people on the list. Also, there is no one from Russia, South America, or Africa on the list.
