I recall several years ago when a UK journal published an article on these advances being made by scientists to cull eggs from the ovaries of aborted fetuses. At the time, it was determined that society was not ready to accept this option and the studies were shelved. Apparently, they have dusted off their previous work and now feel we can handle it. Judging from the lack of response to this thread, I guess they were right.

As an adoptee and adoptive parent, I appreciate the need and desire to know one's biological parents. Each time we visit a doctor, the question of "is there a history of _______ (fill in the blank) disease in your family", goes unanswered. Adoption does not come with such specific data.

I will never forget a GMA segment several years ago, which featured a teen girl, born through donor insemination to a single woman. She wanted to meet her biological father. (This is a perfectly natural desire, especially in the teen years when they are trying to establish themselves). As it turned out, the lab which supplied the semen had cooperated and GMA arranged for the young lady to meet her "dad" through video communication. When the man appeared on the video screen, along with his wife and two young boys, the girl blushed. She had questions! Did he have big feet? Yes! She explained that her feet were so much larger than her friends and those of her mom. More questions followed. Then, the GMA hostette had a question: "Do you know if you have other children from the donations you made at the sperm bank?" He smiled: "From what I understand, I have several hundred .... and I hope they don't all come looking for me."

The blush disappeared from the young girl's face. The smile rapidly became downcast, as reality set in. The desire to find a "dad" had resulted in discovering nothing more than a "sperm donor". She was one of hundreds ... commodities of a self-centered and greedy society.

Since then, the situation has been exacerbated with the growth of IVF conceptions and now, with homosexual unions, the intervention of women who are willing to be inseminated by their sperm and carry "their" child to term. When NBC hostess Jenna Wolfe outed herself and announced she "and her partner" were pregnant, my first question was "who is the father?" What sort of love is this when we deny a child to their bithrite? Will the father be a presence in the child's life? Will the chid be raised knowing she has a father and .. most important of all .. what she has genetically inherited from him?

Children, in contemporary society, have become nothing more than commodities, like furniture. What sort of society have we created?

And just to add to the general nastiness --

Since nobody knows who their daddy is, we're going to have LOTS of half-brothers and half-sisters inadvertently marrying each other. Especially since you have these jokers who have hundreds of sperm-donor offspring all over the country.

This has already become a problem in the dog world. AKC allows AI breeding, and it's certainly convenient and less risky for sire and dam, BUT there's a downside. Because a sire can father hundreds and hundreds of puppies via AI, many more than he can through live cover, when a dog becomes very popular (as a show winner, or a field trial winner, or whatever), not only does everybody want to breed to him, everybody CAN. There was an admittedly stellar field trial dog - 2XNAFC 2XCNAFC FC CFC EbonStar Lean Mac - won the National Field trial twice, and was very "prepotent" i.e. passed his winning characteristics on to his offspring. So everybody had puppies by him. Now, you're hard put to find a pedigree that doesn't have him in it (often multiple times), which has become a problem because he seems to have carried a couple of genetic faults along with his winning ways . . . so now people are advertising stud dogs in the retriever magazines as "NO LEAN MAC" . . . !

To apply this thinking to humans is stupidity on a colossal scale, for lots of reasons.

I sincerely believe that one of the major reasons why some couples are infertile and unable to have biological children is just so that they could adopt orphaned children. God knows that there will be children who need parents when something happens to their own, so I have a moral problem with people going to such extremes as IVF and all the attendant "issues" that go along with the procedure (i.e., status of extra embryos; multiple implantation and "selective" abortion; etc.). I'm sure you thank God for your adoptive parents and that they love you no different than they would biological children. ALL children deserve to know that love.

I have come to believe that we are living in a modern-day Tower of Babel situation, where mankind ventures too far into those areas that belong to God alone. Look at the massive outlays of billions of dollar to discover the "god particle"! It demonstrates how far from the truth mankind has veered in the pursuit of the truth and the subsequent "meaning" of life. Our destruction will be well deserved.
