GRAND COUNTY, Colo. - The coroner says a 31-year-old Michigan man was fatally shot Monday night after authorities say he forced his way into the Hot Sulphur Springs home of a Grand County sheriff's deputy and his wife, who is a county deputy district attorney.
Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock identified that dead man as Joshua Stevens, 31, of Coral, Michigan. An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death is scheduled for Wednesday.
Authorities say Stevens was shot outside the couple's home.
At this time, authorities aren't saying who fired the shots that killed Stevens, according to Susan Medina, spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The violent clash began just before midnight on Monday at the couple's home at 509 Grand Avenue. The 100-year-old building was formerly the historic Riverside Hotel until the couple bought it and converted it into a residence.
The deputy district attorney called 911 and said a stranger was at her front door, behaving erratically and causing a disturbance, according to Susan Medina, spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation revealed the man pushed his way into the home and a violent confrontation followed, Medina said. At some point, the altercation moved outside the home, where shots were fired and the intruder was fatally wounded.
The husband and wife suffered minor injuries during their struggle with the man, Medina said.
Medina said investigators do not believe the incident is linked to the recent shooting deaths of Colorado prisons chief Tom Clements and the district attorney and an assistant district attorney in Kaufman County, Texas. However, investigators continue to pursue all possible leads and background information on the male intruder killed in the shooting.
Because the incident involves a Grand County prosecutor and a sheriff's deputy, the 14th Judicial District Attorney Brett Barkey has requested assistance from the CBI and the First Judicial District Attorney's Office in Golden.
The CBI is leading the investigation. The Critical Incident Team for Moffat, Grand and Routt counties is assisting in the investigation.
Both the deputy district attorney and the sheriff's deputy have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
I wonder if he’s a member of that Aryan gang they were talking about.
“An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death is scheduled for Wednesday.”
Sounds like suicide to me.
Definitely doesn’t sound like he mistook where he was because he was too intoxicated.
The guy just wanted a room.
Using lethal force on an unarmed victim outside of the home, eh?
A private citizen would be in serious trouble. Let's see what happens when a LEO and a DA try and justify.
No, he broke into the house.
Oh, you are right. Sorry. I didn’t see that in this article. Another article says he broke in, there was an altercation, and he was killed.
He did come into the house, sorry again. So yeah, this might be justified, even if it is outside the house. Protecting your life.
If this happened in Michigan, what does the Colorado Dept of Investigations have to do with the situation?
Grand County, CO.
Not enough info in the article to conclude whether it was justified.
Travon was unarmed and in the open, but as more facts come out, the more I believe Zimmerman acted in self-defense.
It could be the same here, but I need more data. How many shots? From afar, or at close range? Was the victim armed? With what? Did he shoot? How about the defenders' wounds? Minor or serious? Defensive wounds, or something else? Did anyone witness the break-in, the fight inside, or the final encounter outside?
I haven't made up my mind yet, but I feel like the article writer has. The tone of the article says the victim was a madman and the cop and his wife were defending themselves. Based on the lack of facts, I'm not ready to say that.
I guess all that freedom to smoke marijuana in CO is causing the dopers to go to a prosecutor’s house and commit suicide.
Sounds like suicide to me.
I think the homeowners will be found to be the victims.

I’m guessing the guy was drunk and stupid.
“The guy just wanted a room.”
This is EXACTLY why I make reservations.
Or bath salts. Was he wearing a hoodie?
