The term came from fundamentalist preachers who would thump the pulpit when making a point. The thump got the attention of the congregation because, especially in the days before electronic sound systems, the sound pierced the chatter of people talking during the message.

When I preach, the thump happens naturally. I don’t realize i do it until I go back to the recording and hear it for myself.

The image that immediately came to my mind was of the sidewalk proseltyzer who would stand on a busy city street corner with his bible held high over his head while he cited scripture to passers by.
