It’s Obama’s new “budget war” program - sell off our weapons after every war to raise cash. We were done in Libya, so he decided to ship the leftovers to the Syrians through Benghazi. /s

Fifty caliber weapons have held the record over the years, I guess. It goes back to 1874 at Adobe Walls, Texas, where Billy Dixon fired a Sharps “Big 50” and shot an Indian off a horse at 1,538 yards (so the story goes). Much has been written about this achievement. Since ballistic tables have been developed in recent years, it’s been said that Billy would have needed to hold over the victim’s head as much as 10 or 12 feet - - never mind whatever the wind was doing. It’s always been one of my favorite shooting stories, though.

Totally happened just like he said. And even he said he wasn’t aiming AT the indian he hit. He was aiming at the -small group- of indians on sitting horseback, horses side by side together. Both sides agree it happened.

One lucky indian in the group got hit. But essentially, he was aiming at a “target” 10 or 12 feet wide, and as tall as a man on a horse.

In war, it’s not the bullet with your name on it to worry about. It’s all those with “to whom it may concern’.

Many shots have been made over 2K. Way over.

Notice that none of the longest shots were taken with the rifle in the article.

The .338 Lapua and .50BMG have traded the record back and forth in modern times.

Dixon probably did make a very long shot that day, it’s just a question of how long it really was.

Universal Background Checks would have prevented this. /s
