people are simply losing interest. We hear about growth in the non-institutional population, a decline in the labor participation rate, people who are unemployed and want a job not being counted as unemployed just because they havent looked for a job in 30 days, How do they know if a person has not looked for work in 30 days ?

How do they know if a person has not looked for work in 30 days ? The only people counted are those who show up at the government unemployment office. All the others "don't exist."
Millions of people could be walking the streets putting in applications everywhere, but they don't get counted if they don't go to the government for help.
