Japan Defense Minister Officially Authorizes SDF Forces Shoot Down N. Korean Missile (Breaking)
Yahoo Japan Headline News (original in Japanese) from Japanese news sources ^ | 7 April 2013 | Yahoo! News Japan (original in Japanese)

Posted on 04/07/2013 6:59:27 AM PDT by AmericanInTokyo

Japan's Defense Minister issued the official military order within the hour or so. It has been stated in news commentary that the North's Musudan intermediate ballistic missile which is an extreme threat to Japan and had been suddenly moved to North Korea's east coast just two days ago for possible launch without warning, without any kind of statement to international space or aviation bodies for a "test launch" of a missile, means that North Korea could launch a sneak missile launch without any warning to the world. So Japan's Defense Minister ordered Japan Self Defense Forces (SDF) into readiness with PAC-3 anti missile batteries to be activated along Japan's West Coast facing North Korea in the event any missile or portions of missile head toward Japanese territory. It will be shot down if a) called for and b) possible. Link to Japanese story. (They are not going to sit around and wait until a surprise launch on Wednesday next week aimed in the area of Japan).

“I don’t trust China.”

No one should. Incidentally, Nixon’s ‘opening up China’ worked out really well for the US, didn’t it. It might have been strategic to try splitting the USSR and China politically, but ultimately those with similar ideologies will find a way to get together - and it will always be preferential to joining forces with your ideological enemy.

I won't be surprised if at some point the media pits Kim”s Aunt as the Power in charge....up against S.Korea's new President.

It was said when her brother, (Kim II) was swinging his rhetoric around that her husband sternly opposed it and was quickly slammed down by her. So she does at least have clout...likely with Kim- Un, more than her husband, in the decisions being made.

“We aren’t talking about some Iraqi scud missile. They have threatened to use nukes. Don’t give them the chance.”

I agree, but I think this should be used as a behind the scenes threat first. They should be told - privately so that the immature and arrogant little jerk running the country can save face - that we will most definitely take out their nukes and all their missile capabilities preemptively if they don't back off the nuke rhetoric immediately. Also, we should make it clear that we will do the same if there is even a hint of them spreading nukes around to their ideological ‘friends’ in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Good God...two of the most important economies in the world (Japan and South Korea) are being terrorized by a psychopathic little punk whose only goal is to blackmail more $$$ from the West. Why can’t someone get a few snipers in there and “neutralize” that little punk and every general and admiral they have?

Short answer to your question is yes: the Japanese have four Konga-class destroyers equipped for BMD with the Aegis system and SM-2 and SM-3 missiles. In fact, the Konga has participated in BMD testing off Hawaii.

Japan is more than capable of handling the shoot-down by themselves. The fact that Tokyo has announced plans to intercept the missile—ahead of Washington—speaks volumes about our lack of leadership against North Korea.

Well look at Israel...They’ve been threatening to take Iran out for 10+ years.

No they haven't. Whatever they have said is in defense of themselves against Iran who has publicly threatened to annihilate Israel. A closer analogy to NK may be Iran but really NK is a hard act to follow

mclame said something on one of the talk shows (Defecate on the Nation?) this A.M. that caught me off-guard. mclame said the U.S. would lose a war with NK before he corrected himself and said the U.S. would win a war with NK. chuck e. shumer was sitting there with mclame and chuck e. shumer may have punched mclame in the side to not say that. Looked like someone was giving out a secret. Who knows? Something out of mclames mouth saying U.S. loses, then correction, gave me pause that more is going on than the citizens in the U.S. are being told on this matter. Then according to some articles there are four NK satellites up there with who knows what on board.

My dad, who spent time with "Uncle Nippon" traveling SE Asia in the years 1942-45 (ending the war in Fukuoka #17 POW Camp, across the bay from Nagasaki), often noted Japanese cruelty, and ascribed it largely to a caste mentality. Curiously, he observed westerners such as he were accorded a greater respect (i.e. less cruelty in comparable situations) than was accorded Japanese criminals and other lower caste(s) from among their countrymen.

Nonetheless, cruelty was a calculated artform among them, not found in outbursts of emotion or insanity, or deviantly evil as one might typically expect to find such in our society. Soldiers with whom he came into contact were all steeped in the pecking order and its transactions.

Dad called their system a meat grinder. The POW system was meant get as much work out of their prisoners as possible, per calorie of food expended upon them. Everyone's ration was meted out closely. It was a grand, gradual slope toward death. It was expected that an average 80kg soldier would literally work his way down to 40kg and die off in 2-3 years. It became clockwork.

My dad lived through 3-1/2 years because he got out of the heavier work details because he was a hospital ward nurse. He was down around 44kg in September of '45. When he appeared on his parents' doorstep in January of 1946, after four months of relatively "high on the hog" eating and treatment, his parents didn't recognize who he was.

I would bet good money Japan already has nuclear weapons.

They’ve had everything they need for many decades.

And to date, they’ve had no reason to show their hand.

There is a big push here in Japan in many quarters behind the scenes in a very sensitive way, to a) revise their MacArthur “renunciation of war” Constitution, and b) ASAP go nuclear weapons now, something they swore off because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But in terms of self defense, it is “shoganai” (it cannot be helped). They did not start this tiff, and have had to put up with such a bad neighbor North Korea for years, yes, as you said, Kehoe-san, push is indeed coming to shove in Japan and with a conservative party now at the helm (Abe Government), it looks like they have all the pieces in place to move forward post haste and make DPRK look like kid’s play when it comes to nuke arsenal and delivery capability. Of course, that will get South Korea going too, and then Taiwan will want them as well. This is what we call an arms race. All due to the little Fat One who couldn’t keep his Taepodong missile tucked in his Fruit of the Looms and his big fat mouth shut.

Easy to do with established launch pads out in the open and set in place like at Musudan (Hwadae County) or on the West Coast where they brought all the journalists and had a failure--and where our assets could see real time if they are mating stages and erecting on the pads. It is the mobile ICBM missiles on long 18 wheeled trucks and ones hidden under brush and in tunnels all over North Korea in the mountains, with technology supplied by China mostly and some by Russia, that will be very hard to just "go in and take out". Sorry, them's the cards. They have done a good job of hiding many of their sneak attack offensive materials, try as we much to track it through ELINT, SIGINT, satellite (very little HUMINT).

That is the general understanding, yes, quite difficult to do, trajectory, speed, altitude wise.

North Korea has threatened those conventional terrorist attacks (dirty bomb, chems/bios smuggled in), and they have a plan in place to hit multiple targets with chems and bios through crack commandos infiltrating all over Seoul, hitting subway system, large buildings, government offices, etc. They have made just such threats toward American infrastructure and have even hinted “your (USA) destruction from our DPRK’ Peoples Army might not necessary come from the skies.” You figure what they are threatening. They have studied al Qaeda techniques in great detail, including constructing crack IED assembly teams in case they are invaded on the ground by joint US/South Korean attack team.
