Two boys allegedly kidnapped in Florida by their father turned up with their parents in Cuba Monday, officials said...

...the boys were taken by their parents, Joshua Hakken, 35, and his wife, Sharyn Hakken, 34, who had lost custody of the children after Joshua's drug-possession arrest in Louisiana.

They were with the grandmother....NOT in state custody.

So what? Utterly irrelevant since they weren't with their parents. When I look at the constitution I can't find any justification for a "child protective services" branch of the government.

I don’t care about the case, or why they chose Cuba, just that a small sailboat could slip right on through the USCG/LE/.mil radar screen undetected at 5mph.

Yes interesting. I wonder if they actually saw it and ignored it because they didn't identify it as something they were interested in or they just didn't see it.

“If there were legitimate reasons to fight the state on this the method is NOT to flee to a totalitarian state. How moronic.”

Five years ago I would have agree with you but sadly we are all now living in the USSA a “totalitarian” state for all intents and purposes. Cuba may not look so bad to these folks.

DEFAX can grab your kids with very little evidence of wrong doing and getting them back can take years. Especially cute little white kids who they can sell out for adoption. I don’t blame these folks for grabbing their kids and leaving the country. I probably would have gone to Belieze or somewhere else but thats just me.

What are they really going to miss by leaving here? CWII maybe.

The irony is that if either of these boys develops a great fastball or curveball, they can escape back to the U.S. in 15 years and the Steinbrenners will pay them millions of dollars.

Probably didn’t see it. No bureaucrat would risk an email or any comms saying, “If you see this vessel, ignore it.” If it then sank in a storm etc, big risk to that ‘crat.

I’d like to be cheering on parents who take back their own children, but Cuba....? Hmmm....Perhaps the kids are not safe with this pair....

“The parents were preppers and had a small amount of mary jane.”

In many prepper quarters, stockpiling medicines is part of the process. Many of us could be busted for possession of drugs I guess.

I think you are spot on about Panama. Except that it does have extradition with the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_extradition_treaties

Cuba is about the only nation in the Caribbean with no extradition. However, it is a 50/50 guess as to whether they will embrace him, or do like they did to skyjackers, and put them to work cutting cane in the fields.

I see the attempt to continue to paint Josh Hakken as “anti-government” (ooooh, scary) without defining the term continues.

I pray the kids are safe and the parents will raise them well and wisely.

He fled to Cuba because the American government has effectively declared him an Enemy of the State (he’s ‘anti-government’, you know. Have you heard?)

Think about what you’d do if the media and government officials described YOU in those terms.

Being “anti-government” in Cuba can land you in jail for the rest of your life, a sentence that usually includes torture.

I wonder whether Cuba will let them stay. I rather imagine, they’ll be treated well and paraded around as examples of the evil American government. But in truth, no country is more repressive than Cuba.

You’re assuming that was his first choice, not “Oh, ****, Destination A, B, and C are no longer viable; the risk of losing my kids (to gunfire or seizure) by the Feds is greater than the likelihood of us making it to _________, __________, or ___________, and I don’t have enough water/food/fuel/ammo for another detour”.

Put yourself in his shoes—a man working to keep his family together and protected.

Alright; but someone who dislikes the United States for its drug and firearms laws may not live happily ever after in Cuba.

Apparently, the father has vocalized he hated Obama (that may be the “justification” for the ‘anti-government’ nonsense).

He’s a wanted fugitive. Some of his fellow citizens have eagerly declared their willingness to turn him in, no questions asked.

I don’t expect he has any illusions about living happily ever after in Cuba.

I do expect he just wants himself and his family to survive, and not be gunned down like dogs, while The State cheers itself on ridding itself of a Dangerous Anti-Government Terrorist.

I also expect it’s easier to criticize a man for fleeing to a country, any country, to escape people who have no qualms about taking his life, his wife’s life (and even the lives of his children) than to walk a mile in his shoes.

Someone who doesn’t want to make a desperate last stand where he, his spouse and children will face almost certain death, and whose other courses of action are cut off by pursuit and fear of detection (and possibly low supplies).

Anyone who would want to walk a mile in this man’s shoes would be a dunce; almost as dumb as a guy who would flee to Cuba to avoid prosecution by the State of Louisiana.
