I have friends who pay +$100/month on cable. Are they crazy?? On TV!?
I gave up cable in 2002. That was way before Netflix.
These days with my AppleTVs, Hulu and Netflix, I get along just fine.
Get a hobby and you’ll never miss TV.
Good for you. We have Directv and we’re paying a bundle for lots of channels and little to watch. If we could get decent internet speed out here, we’d dump them, and stream online. However, even Youtube videos can sometimes present a problem with our speed, so that’s not an option right now.
We hardly turn on Fox anymore; I get all my news from this site. With that in mind, I need to get a donation in the mail.
We canceled cable about two years ago. We do have Netflix and use other streaming sources occasionally. But we don’t watch all that much TV.
In addition to the other benefits people have already noted, my kids are not exposed to the constant assault of commercials. When I asked them last fall what they wanted for Christmas, they just said, “toys.” They really didn’t know or care which toys were popular. (This meant I could get them what I wanted them to have and was within our budget, and everyone was happy.)
Back when we had cable and they were watching cartoon channels with the incessant commercials, I was constantly barraged with, “I want...” all year ‘round. It’s really nice having them be so much less materialistic.

Even though I am a history buff, I seldom watch The History Channel anymore. They went very leftist when they: a.) showed the Howard Zinn commie series, and b.) refused to show The Kennedys miniseries after being pressured not to show it. Besides, their shows scarcely contain any more information than I can find on the dust jacket flap of a book on the same subject.
My wife is still resistant to the idea of "cutting the cord"; but she's getting there. For one, she likes to watch the DIY (Do It Yourself) and HGTV (Home & Garden TV) channels. However, they feature almost no gardening anymore. Most of the shows involve either flamboyantly gay designers or shows involving gay couples who are designing something or looking for a house. I kid that HGTV now stands for "Homo-Gay TV". Actually, I usually just refer to it as "the Queer Channel". Even she is becoming disgusted with the preponderance of gays on those channels. This is the type of programming that is designed to break down people's resistance to perversion. We are getting tired of being subjected to it.
Another problem area: she likes to watch her favorite shows when the networks and channels happen to show them. She can have an entire series on DVD or Blu-ray, but prefers to watch it when it happens to be broadcast. She is so old-school I am having a hard time converting her to a "watch on demand" mentality. So, even though she can watch a show like Bones on Netflix, she DVRs it whenever some cable channel shows it.
The other remaining obstacle is that she loves the dish DVR and the ability to pause and rewind/fast-forward live TV. I guess I'll have to get a Tivo box as well. But, if we drop dish, we can use the money to buy a Tivo and DVDs or Blu-rays of some of her favorite shows. We can stream the rest.

We’re thinking of selling the house and buying a sailboat to live aboard. Will mostly have wifi, but, that’s about it. I plan on doing what I can through Netflix, but, will mis H2.

Many History Channel and Discovery Channel shows and documentaries are available on Netflix for a whole lot less than $100 per month.
It is relevant! I thought maybe I was one of just a few , looks like I have more company than I thought.
You motivated me. I was channel surfing the other night and was so irritated by all the commercials I decided to try and give up TV. It suddenly dawned on me that paying for cable TV was like paying for junk mail.
