N. Korea shifts missile locations ahead of imminent launch: sources

SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- As South Korea and the United States brace for a possible missile launch by North Korea, the communist nation appears to be moving several missiles repeatedly on its east coast in an apparent attempt to interfere with intelligence monitoring, sources familiar with the matter said Thursday.

According to intelligence analysis, the North has moved two Musudan intermediate missiles, which had been concealed in a shed in the eastern port city of Wonsan, in and out of the facility. Four or five wheeled vehicles, suspected to be so-called transporter erector launchers (TEL), were also spotted being moved around in South Hamgyeong Province.

"There are signs the North could fire off Musudan missiles any time soon," an intelligence source said, asking for anonymity. "But the North has been repeatedly moving its missiles in and out of a shed, which needs close monitoring."

South Korean and U.S. intelligence officials have been closely monitoring the North Korean facility believed to contain the Musudan missiles mounted on the TELs. The missile can fly 3,000-4,000 kilometers, making it capable of hitting the U.S. base in Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

Another source said the North's latest move is aimed at adding extra "fatigue" to South Korean and U.S. officials so as to thwart their efforts to immediately capture the moment of the missile launch.

The South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command on Wednesday declared "Watchcon 2" status, up one level from normal conditions, to step up monitoring and increase the number of staff on emergency standby around the clock.

Seoul officials say there are high chances that Pyongyang could fire off a missile around April 15 to mark the birthday of late founding leader Kim Il-sung, the current ruler Kim Jong-un's grandfather. Last year, the North unsuccessfully conducted a rocket launch days before the 100th anniversary of Kim's birth.

On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se told lawmakers that there is a very high probability North Korea would test launch medium-range missiles at any time, with the timing depending on a political decision.

While some media reported that the North is believed to have finished fueling its missiles, the last step for a liftoff, the shift of missile locations raised questions about the information because moving fuel-injected missiles could destabilize them.

Experts say the single-warhead, liquid-fuel missile can be on standby up to one week after it is filled with fuel, which reportedly takes about 30 minutes.

Officials in Seoul say there are possibilities that the North may fire off several missiles from different sites, in case of an unsuccessful launch of the Musudan missile, which has never been tested in the nation before.

According to military officials, the TELs in South Hamgyeong Province were believed to be launch platforms for short-range Scud missiles, which have a range of 300-500 kilometers, and medium-range Nodong missiles, which can travel 1,300-1,500 km.

Ahead of the late founding leader's birthday, the North has been mobilizing military personnel and equipment to practice for a massive military parade at Mirim airport near Pyongyang, a senior military official said. As the world braces for a potential missile launch by the unpredictable nation, its front-line troops seemed to be less focused on preparing for a war and instead concentrating on spring farming, a senior military official said.

"Front-line North Korean troops near the military demarcation line have started farming," the defense ministry official said, noting the number of military training exercises dropped sharply compared to last month.

The latest move was seen as less tense compared to when the North in late March put its strategic rocket force on its top level of combat readiness.

After weeks of near-daily war threats, the North's state media on Wednesday toned down its inflammatory language and largely focused on upcoming events.

Despite repeated war threats from Pyongyang, an increasing number of North Korean soldiers have gone AWOL from their front-line combat units in recent months, prompting senior officials to conduct tougher inspections of troops. In the first three months of this year, more than 40 soldiers have fled from their front-line barracks, which is much more than in previous years. Seoul officials suspect the uptick reflects rising discontent in the rank and file suffering from grueling winter training and food shortages.

The North has relied on international handouts since the late 1990s when it suffered a massive famine that was estimated to have killed 2 million people.

Eeek. Well, just keep your lip zipped, and the rest of us will sleep a bit easier tonight for what you've said so far.

The military is required to grow their food....it's planting season now. However often the food they grow is diseased and or drought affects growth. Little fertilizer gets through now.

If you look at some of the military videos with Kim-Un notice the solders behind the ones they line up (fatter ones always in the front for the photo ops. Many are very thin.

The worst part is that they still can’t reach Washington DC.

Simple answer here. Just nuke Li’l Kim’s hideout and take over the country with the same logic as the cop who shoots dead an armed street person stupid enough to aim his weapon at the cop. Tell the Chicoms “He had it coming.” Nothing personal. Then we can all return to the eventual Obama handing the keys of our country over to Beijing.

Still calling ruse on this whole situation. Saying motive is money. Gotta love experts, for experts are nothing but props; well paid props but still experts are props. Taking nothing away from this situation though will say this ... Why have we given Nks money in the past? What we presently have is Nks throwing back our money in the form of a perceived missile attack. Are our people, in our nation, so stupid each of us cannot figure this out? This is simple mathematics. Give a bad guy money and the bad guy will spend it. This time it was spent on missiles. What is so difficult that our politicians think We the People, all the People, any and whoever considers themselves People cannot figure out what is taking place? This is appalling. Nikita Khrushchev, former Soviet Union Premier was right. Our politicians are giving our enemies the means by which to kill Americans and take us over. Remember Obama and his words ... I'll have more flexibility after the election. Our media know this! Nobody can be this stupid! Why kid ourselves? Do We the People and our Media have a death wish? Rant Off.

If they launch anything....even if the target is the ocean rather than sovereign land (Japan,South Korea, etc) we should shoot it down.

Obama had Rodman ask Kim to provide some distraction.

I doubt that the message was sent via Rodman. We heard Osama Obama himself promise the USSR's Foreign Minister that he'd show Vlad more "flexibility" after the election.Osama,no doubt,communicated...*directly* communicated...a similar promise to that fat little f**k running the show in NK.Stand by for a 2.3 trillion dollar bailout of NK to help out Osama's not-so-little buddy...his philosophical soulmate.Hey,if Chavez could die a billionaire why can't that fat little f**k live like a trillionaire in a country where there's not a single dog...pet or otherwise...to be seen?

The world knows that Kim Jong Un is a typical cowardly communist fake. He is dog crap--a mouth without a face. His weapons are all fake. Even China will betray his little house dog nation (North Korea) for western money and entertainment, because Kim Jong Un has behaved like a little woman: indecisively so many times. He/she is afraid and won't do anything. There are no real men in North Korea--only whores. His hopes of inviting western men to all of North Korea's women and men for brothel tourism are shattered.

“Just what the heck is their justification for all this saber rattling?”

I think at the very least, the US & SK military exercises are a pretext for the Norks to complain for whatever reason they really have. However, I read the Norks used a military exercise to mask an invasion of southern Korea in 1950, so they may think we’re attempting to be as sneaky as they were. I think the biggest reason is that any totalitarian regime needs an external enemy, to distract their disaffected populace from their own failings. “Never mind your starving families Comrades, the evil Americans are about to invade and kill us all.”
