The man who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981 has behaved well over the past year when he's been freed from a Washington mental hospital to visit his mother in Virginia, according to U.S. Secret Service reports.
Agents trailed John Hinckley on more than 35 days during 2012 when he visited his mother's home in Williamsburg. Surveillance logs show he shopped at PetSmart, Target and the grocery store Harris Teeter.
He also did volunteer work, visited an art museum on the campus of the College of William and Mary and made planned therapy visits. The logs were part of more than a 150 pages of documents filed Wednesday as part of a court case where Hinckley is asking a judge to let him spend more time at his mother's home.

Hinkley’s actions spawned the Brady Bill, which was the foundation and catalyst of current gun control push, he is the unspoken hero of leftists.
My SIL lives in the same gated community as Hinckley’s mother. In fact, I was shopping at the same Harris Teeter last week while visiting from out of state. SIL says there are many who are upset with the regular visits and, frankly, don’t want him there, period.
Agree completely. If the man is fit enough to visit his mother, to shop, visit art museums and such, then he surely is fit enough to be in prison, institutionalized permanently.

So let me get this straight, We are presently have a gun control debate because a nut job shoots and murders people. Now we are talking about letting a nut job out freely to enjoy life like that's a good thing, and all he did was shoot up a lot of people including the president. Can someone tell me what in the hell is going on here?
This brings back horrible memories from 1989, when, David Peterson, a man who slipped away from Connecticut Valley Hospital undetected, boarded a bus downtown and stabbed 9 y/o Jessica Short 34 times with a hunting knife he bought, in front of hundreds of shoppers at an annual sidewalk sale.
To think these people can be *rehabed* is ludicrous. Here in CT, we have eliminated the death penalty and closed most psychiatric facilities...and allow them furlow, to kill again.
Scary stuff. I don’t blame the residents at all. Had adamlanza lived, he would not have to answer to a death penalty. Ordinary citizens are being disarmed. What is down is now up...my cynicism is well founded....when will we wake up?

Sirhan is in prison [sometimes under the death penalty and not, depending on the whim of Cali law] and Hinkley is in St. Elizabeths Hospital’s psych ward....continually asking for longer unsupervised visits.
What could go wrong?
