So let me see if I have this right... a shotgun will shoot a bad guy through a door but won’t shoot your kids through a wall, but an AR-15 will shoot your kids through the wall but is no good for shooting bad guys through the door.

There’s no reason to try birdshot.
It makes no sense. #4 buck or better, period.
There’s no reason to try anything less, or hope, or guess.
We know that buckshot is best. #4 buck is the smallest effective shot if over penetration is a concern.
The best overall shell for home defense is Federal #1 buck with the FC wad.
Next is plated 00 buck.
Since the #1 buck is often hard to find, by default the best available shell is 00 buck.
Why would anyone experiment with rounds that are likely to be ineffective when lives are at stake?
Especially when proven rounds are readily available?
You have to aim the shotgun anyway, so why use bird shot? Aim like you should, and hit the perp hard, with buckshot.
There are credible studies that show the .223 safer in social situations than a 12 gauge.
So blindly shooting thru a door with a shotgun is better?
if you don’t defend your kids they can die in a home invasion and fire, just ask that poor doctor in CT.
