But as he prepared to take office this week, Mr. Toomey hardly sounded like a partisan rabble-rouser.
For one thing, he supported repealing the dont ask, dont tell policy to allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Mr. Toomey also abstained, in a recent interview here in his hometown, from taking a position on the recent tax compromise between President Obama and Republican leaders to extend the Bush-era tax cuts despite the strong opposition of his Senate patron, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, and of the Club for Growth, of which Mr. Toomey is a past president.

But he signaled in the interview, as he did during the campaign, that he would not be an ideological purist.
On dont ask, dont tell, Mr. Toomey said that since the military brass believed that allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly would enable the armed forces to execute their mission better, he was supportive of a repeal. He also said that the previous policy was wrong because it forced gay service members to live a lie.

During the campaign, Mr. Urban, the former Specter aide, helped Mr. Toomey soften his image and connect with moderate Republicans. He arranged, for example, for Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who supports abortion rights, to headline a fund-raiser in Philadelphia for Mr. Toomey, who opposes abortion rights.
Mr. Toomey kept social issues on the back burner, saying then as he does now that they were of lower priority than restoring the economy. During the campaign, he did not promote his endorsement by Ms. Palin. He also said he would have voted to confirm Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Mr. Obamas first nominee to the Supreme Court.

Ping to my PA FRiends...a pretty clear description of our TurncoatToomey!
And, FWIW, I have tried to reach his Pgh office—constant busy signal!
I bet he’s getting hammered with calls. And with good reason.
You can reach him on his Facebook page ;)
Or the other one just created in the last few days...
Arlene Toomey
Feel free to tell the Bastard what you think.
That scumbag Toomey made fools out of a lot of people.
Maybe Santorum knew something.
Pat Toomey is such a big man. His offices in PA, and DC are now telling callers outraged at his caving of the second amendment that future calls of this nature could be considered an act of terror. Now I really think he's a scumbag and a disgusting human being. Perhaps his Republican collegues in the Senate should talk about this sudden attempt to Destroy the 1st Amendment also.
Senator Cruz, please pick up the White courtesy phone.
IMHO, the terrorist is the one attempting to write laws that subverts the Constitution.
Toomey is up for re-election in four years. There are a lot of gun owners in Pennsylvania, and I hope they don’t have short memories.
Arlen Toomey is finally out of the closet. Yes he’s offcially a RINO now.
If you can disengage your lips from Ø's ass long enough, put one of these on your bumper .. you've earned it, Benedict !
Toomey, another one term senator from the great state of Pa.
I started having reservations about him after the primary, when I heard he worked in one of the big Finance houses in NYC. Bailout supporter??? Would he vote to bail out the banks next time? I think that answer is already clear...
