School: Kids Need Permission Slip for Santorum Talk

Michigan high school cancels, then un-cancels controversial speech

Listening to Rick Santorum is the kind of activity that requires parental permission. That's the conclusion a Michigan high school has come to, after a planned speech by the former presidential candidate inspired massive backlash. On Monday, Grosse Pointe High School decided to just cancel the event, but that generated outcry from the other side. So now the speech is back on, but students will need a signed permission slip to watch, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Langston Bowens, the socially conservative senior who invited Santorum, has accused the school of cancelling the speech for political reasons, saying the superintendent voiced opinions about Santorum's views on gay marriage and education during a conference call between district officials and the national conservative group organizing the event. "I didn't expect such a negative response," Bowens says. "He was banned because of personal issues." But the school denies that, saying its main problem was that the group refuses to provide an advance copy of the speech.

Santorum's speech isn't even about marriage, abortion or anything remotely controversial to liberals yet he's being treated as porn.

But the kiddies can get an abortion without mommy and daddy's knowledge.

Sick public union bastards.

The speech is about civics yet the nazis will work to silence him for his opinions on a subject that isn’t even mentioned.

he’s being treated like a conservative.

if he was being treated like porn he’d have mandatory attendance, state and federal funding, and the full support of the school system.

But race baiters, homosexuals, intercourse pushing abortionists are welcome on campus anytime and the students are required to attend!

Each student’s parents will make the right decision on if their child should be able to listen to Rick Santorum.

Leave it to the parents and not the whims of a public school teacher or administrator.

They seriously demanded a copy of the speech beforehand?

There is no legitimate reason to do that, other than to sharp-shoot a speaker, try to neutralize what they have said, provide a rebuttal immediately after, and to tear their speech apart and character assassinate them after they have left.

The best way to approach this situation is to convince students that what Santorum has to say is “forbidden fruit”. Truth that their school, its administrators and teachers do not want them to hear.

Given that perspective, it would be a sell-out performance, and students will hard sell their parents to sign their permission slips. It will also kill dead efforts after the speech to criticize it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. He's a former Senator, now a private citizen.

The precedent has now been set, let's see if parental permission is required for similar speakers in the future.

“Each student’s parents will make the right decision on if their child should be able to listen to Rick Santorum.”

When conservatives object to a presentation, they are told their children have to have a signed form to opt out. The presentation goes on no matter what.

In this case you have to have a form to opt in. And of course if you don't have enough signed forms, the presentation can be canceled.

Seems like one group of parents is being treated differently than another.....What happened to equal protection under the law? Oh yes, under socialism some pigs are more equal than others.

One . crazy . world !

People are afraid to death of Santorum, because he states the truth; my husband got fired on March 4 of this year, because he repeated one of Rick's truths in a 5th-grade public school classroom.

Santorum is to be commended for speaking the truth no matter who ostracizes or criticizes him for it. He is a tru Profile in Courage.

Rick has very compelling arguments for traditional marriage. Primarily, we need the traditional family, as it is the main building block of civilized societies.

There are many cases in history where societies have died out because natural marriage was not the norm and populations declined.

Right here in Pennsylvania we have had the example of the Shakers. The Shakers were a devout sect that forbade marriage and any and all forms of sexual activity. The men and women lived separately in brotherly and sisterly love. However, without descendants, the old order died out.

All we have to remember them by is their beautiful Shaker furniture and their lovely hymns.

I understand your concern and you should take your Equal Protection complaint against Grosse Pointe High School to a Federal Court and provide examples in their recent history of times the administrators of Grosse Pointe High School have permitted a liberal former US Senator to speak to students without parental permission.

You have a great case!

Thanks! He was a substitute teacher and had been working for the district full-time for ten years. So it came as a bit of a shock (especially since this incident happened over a year ago); he's still fighting to get his job back.

“...yet he’s being treated as porn.”

If porn was the subject of the speech, no permission slip would be required.
