President Obama warned North Korea on Thursday that his administration will take "all necessary steps" to defend the United States from aggression and urged Pyongyang to tone down its threats.
"Now is the time for North Korea to end the kind of belligerent approach that they've been taking, and to try to lower temperatures," he said in the Oval Office, after a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "Nobody wants to see a conflict on the Korean Peninsula."
North Korea, he said, must "observe the basic rules and norms" set by the international community, including the UN. "We will continue to try to resolve some of those issues diplomatically, even as I indicated to the Secretary General, that the United States will take all necessary steps to protect its people and to meet our obligations under our alliances in the region.
Ban said he is "deeply concerned" by Kim Jong-un's latest threats, which are "not helpful."

as for the fact that this azzhat HAS any missile defense systems with which to defend the US— BLAME BUSH (and Reagan)
I am convinced that a North Korean nuke exploding on US territory would be met with Obama running to the UN begging for help. Obama would never use US nukes in response and would at most send in a few cruise missiles and then seek a negotiated settlement.
This time he’s sending Rodman AND Madonna.
Obama saying the U.S. will do everything necessary to defend the U.S. undermines South Korea and Japan. Those two countries depend on the U.S. nuclear umbrella. Without absolute assurance that the U.S. will also do everything necessary to defend them from a nuclear power, which North Korea is, they must consider nuking-up.
The same is true for Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. They also depend on the U.S. nuclear umbrella. Were we to go wobbly with respect to Iran, they too would have to consider nuking-up.
The truth is, a weak U.S. will result in dozens of countries having nuclear weapons and make probable the escalation of a regional conflict somewhere in the world, into a nuclear war.
Laughter will do that to lots of people.
