Obama to raise upper-income seniors' Medicare premiums

April 12, 2013 Obama To Hike Upper-Income Seniors' Medicare

SCOTT APPLEWHITE

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama's plan to raise Medicare premiums for upper-income seniors would create five new income brackets to squeeze more revenue for the government from the top tiers of retirees, the administration revealed Friday.

First details of the plan emerged after Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testified to Congress on the president's budget. As released two days earlier, the budget included only a vague description of a controversial proposal that has grown more ambitious since Obama last floated it. (snip)

Obama's new budget calls for raising $50 billion over 10 years by increasing monthly "income-related" premiums for outpatient and prescription drug coverage. The comparable number last year was $28 billion over the decade.

Currently, single beneficiaries making more than $85,000 a year and couples earning more than $170,000 pay higher premiums. Obama's plan would raise the premiums themselves and also freeze adjustments for inflation until 1 in 4 Medicare recipients were paying the higher charges. Right now, the higher monthly charges hit only about 1 in 20 Medicare recipients.

Gosh, it’s almost like we share the same ideals. On a conservative sight no less.

“It’s when money is confiscated, and not voluntarily invested, that Capitalism is bastardized.”

But in your case that taxed you, which also bastardizes capitalism.

Socialism also bastardizes capitalism

That’s the part I’m trying to convince you to reject, but you want “your” money back without acknowledging that “Your” is not really “Your” but some poor bastard who is trying to raise a family and not get zeroed out with all the taxes required to support socialists like you.

You said, “some poor bastard who is trying to raise a family and not get zeroed out with all the taxes required to support socialists like you.”

You must be young. When we were in our 20s, many years ago, we realized that SS and Medicare weren’t sustainable, even though our hard earned money was being confiscated to try to sustain it.

Our solution? Forget it. Do the best you can to raise the family, and put enough aside so that you aren’t relying on SS or Medicare to take care of you in your old age.

We did our best to change the government and it’s programs through our votes. However, it wasn’t enough.

If you have a better solution, other than bad mouthing those of us who are older, but had no say in what the government takes from our paychecks, I would love to hear it.

Until then, I have other fish to fry.

My husband’s entire family is from the West, Texas area, and they are more important than you.

JCB, we do have the same ideals. Frankly, I’m a conservative libertarian, though not a fan of Ron Paul’s international views.

Been working since the early 70s.

Have always felt that way.

This is nothing new.

Instead of whining and name calling on a website, DO something about it.

Let me know your brilliant ideas to change things.

Also have paid over $600,000 in income tax through the years.

That’s it? Lord I just wish mine were so low over my lifetime. And with Hurricane Rita, the insurance company paid you so you probably made your house even better which caused everybody’s insurance to go up because of course you just had to rebuild on the water.

“My husband’s entire family is from the West, Texas area, and they are more important than you.”

Of COURSE this is true, and you are unimportant compared to my family too.

I genuinely hope your husbands family is OK.

Why even mention my posts on this thread in that context? They are entirely unrelated

Well at least I can manage a cogent argument that goes beyond “if you voted, you are a socialist”. You think that is brilliant rhetorical posturing.

I guess I hurt your feelings. I’m sorry.

Howie Carr (Boston radio host) has said for YEARS that he would be willing to take a lump sum of the money in his SS ‘account’ (money that was paid in, and not a penny more), and he would handle his retirement on his own.

Nah, you didn’t hurt my feelings. But I appreciate the fact that you thought of it. I actually enjoy a good debate.

My argument maynot be “brilliant” but it has value. I also believe I had some other points that you might have failed to read.

As far a “managing a cogent argument” that is debatable (pun intended). Your point (singular) was restated in different forms and always included “socialist” name calling. Not a good debate method.

I only revisited this thread to see if there had been any great solution presented. As in other threads of this nature, as well as this one, there doesn’t seem to be one presented. Just the usual.

At the risk of being redundant, I think there needs to be reform. There are ways to do that that would be equitable to all. There is no real reason for a generational divide.

Also where in this conversation did I state what I paid in SS? It was income tax doofus.. Obviously reading comprehension is beyond your capability.

Why don't you take your left wing yankee dribble to du where you belong.

You make zero sense but still are a HUGE drain to the Generation X people who have been screwed by you lazy Boomers!!!! A disgraceful generation who has DESTROYED America!!!!
