Bomb North Korea, Before It’s Too Late

By JEREMI SURI

AUSTIN, Tex.

SINCE February, the North Korean government has followed one threatening move with another. The spiral began with an underground nuclear test. Then the North declared the armistice that ended the Korean War invalid. The young dictator Kim Jong-un followed with a flurry of threats to attack civilian targets in South Korea, Japan and the United States.

Bomb North Korea, Before It’s Too Late

We had the chance in 1951 with General MacArthur in charge. MacArthur started out a press conference in Korea (7 Mar 1951) by tweaking President Truman, with references to what he called "the serious, indeed abnormal inhibitions placed on me, the lack of additional forces given me and other restraints imposed from Washington." Truman fired him 11 Apr 1951 for "repeated conflicts over the conduct of the war, and critical remarks he had made against the administration."

By now we are about 62 years too late!

It's probably for the best. At the time we had already lost our monopoly on nuclear weapons. If Mac had proceeded north with nuclear assist he most probably would have taken on the Chinese Communists. The USSR had nuclear weapons by late August 1949 and would most likely have entered the spreading conflict with both sides going nuclear. "Better dead than red"? I'm not really sure...

Regards,
GtG

Well the longer we wait the better prepared North Korea will be to carry out a seriously devastating attack.

Sooner or later north Korea will probably make a move seeing themselves doomed otherwise. They need external revenue to keep their commuistist dictatorship alive. They only have 3 options to get such a thing:

1: Transform themselfs to free up their economy so their people can actually work for it.
- This has proven unacceptable to the north Korean government over the last 50+ years.

2: Extort foreigners with threats of war & attack into funding their regime. (Such as is currently their strategy)
-This will only work so long as their corrupt system can survive on the sums of money they are able to steal and extort from our corrupt politicians. As it is already not enough we can assume that this survival plan is faltering.

3: Sell what they do have & produce which is weapons of a somewhat 2ndary quality thus forcing them to seek markets forbidden to everyone else. IE terrorist.
- This is also happening with regard to North Korea despite our attempt to sanctions & blockade them.

So one way or the other either North Korea is going to nuke us directly or they are going to sell their nukes to someone else who will such as a terrorist organization.

I need not remind anyone that there is no defense we could possablity make that would keep them at bay forever. It is not possible to win a defensive war so sooner or later they will hit us.

Yeah, let’s start yet another bombing campaign... with China sitting just to the north, what could go wrong?

Sounds like you're conceding our position in the world to China.

I’m saying bombing North Korea will involve a whole lot more than our idiot politicians can imagine. And are we assuming the Norks don’t have functional alliances with countries who’ve placed terror cells inside this country?

If we strike the Norks, we’d better know what we’re heading into.

An attack on NK would probably result in the near destruction of Seoul via thousands of artillery tubes on the border. If the US really believes the Norks have the capability to launch a devastating attack on the US, we would likely have to make that terrible tradeoff.

No good answers here, and none that I have.
