If the assignment had been to write an editorial for the 1861 Charleston, SC Mercury defending slavery and secession, would we be having this conversation?

Absolutely. I think its a good plan to read and study propaganda and discuss why it is used by tyrants but to ask a young person to become that tyrant is disturbing. In high school my son pretty much had his choice of rolls in the school plays. For some reason he asked to play Pontius Pilate in JCSS and led the Nazi singing Caberet. I need to ask him why those two rolls. He said he found it very disturbing.
