Not thinking anyone is surprised about This but CNN is reporting that: Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, became the second Republican senator not involved in negotiating a bipartisan background check measure to say she will support it, according to a statement Sunday.

She described the bill as a responsible compromise between two senators - Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pennsylvania, and Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia - who have strong ratings from the National Rifle Association. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, has indicated his support for the deal.

I was going to say something; but I thought better of it.

The background check to be run by the US government, whatever form of background check is authorized by law, will be used as registration of guns and gun owners.

There is a reason for the current government data center in West Virginia (Sen. Manchin’s state) and the HUGE data collection and preservation center now under construction in a remote area of, I believe, Idaho.

THE WV GOVERNMENT DATA COLLECTION CENTER CURRENTLY REVIEWS APPLICATIONS FOR CONCEALED CARRY PERMITS. When I applied for a CC, I got a call from the WV center at 2:00 AM, and I've never even had a traffic ticket. Don't kid yourself that you have any privacy.

Somebody wants to do something with this country without worrying about armed opposition.

The Manchin Toomey Bill has been rewritten by CCRKBA. I’ve read it. As it’s written right now I support it. Gun owners get many rights back and some significant protections also. Always beware of the gut and stuff.

The details are very important. It looks like Toomey, Manchin, and Coburn have outsmarted the “progressives”.

The bill proposed has plenty of trojan horses in it for our side, and takes about 20 steps toward restoring our rights for a very small one backward.

I think the NRA will be with this one as well, and I think Obama may veto it. It is much like when Senator Coburn forced Obama to sign the guns in parks bill as part of the budget he wanted.

This has all kinds of stuff that Obama and the anti-freedom people hate. It is a real “compromise” in where we get a lot, and they get to save face, and get very, very little.

The natural inclination of all socialists is to take more power for the government and less freedom for the people.

Huh? Before this bill, one could travel with the gun OR the ammo in locked containers.

With this bill, BOTH must be locked.

Show me these rights gun owners win back. There are none.

Any Gun Bill is going to erode gun rights.

Whatever' sugar' they have put into the Bill is only to get it past.

The point is that there should not be any Gun Bill at all, and they have used the shootings in CT as a pretext to get it done.

This is tantamount to King George removing the intolerable acts but keeping the tax on tea, just 'to make a point'

They are passing this Bill to make the same point, and our reaction should be the same, we don't recognize your right to make any restrictions on our freedoms.

Interesting. I wonder what Mayor Big Gulp will say about the transit provisions?

I am much more skeptical about this bill now that I understand that the Coburn amendment is *not* included. You may be right in the above assessment.
