I’m not saying universally, of course, because of HIV and (blood borne) Hepatitis C, which are most certainly associated with homosexuals as a subset of those infected(*); but not meningitis.
That cluster could have just as likely been among church goers who attended a pot luck picnic where someone with the disease made a big bowl of tasty potato salad. Or a public drinking fountain at the park.
(*) 10% of the population of Egypt has Hep-C, which was caused by a humanitarian effort to vaccinate against a particularly nasty water borne parasite. They reused needles.
So, because it could have been the same with church goers at a picnic, it makes sense not to pursue an underlying cause for a meningitis cluster among members of a group that recent history shows were killed in alarming numbers by another hidden disease with different presenting illnesses.
And this group is notorious for unsafe, unhealthy practices.
