A Short Recent History of Pressure-Cooker Bombs
Time ^ | 4/16/2013 | Michael Crowley

Posted on 04/17/2013 5:54:12 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

“A technique commonly taught in Afghan terrorist training camps is the use/conversion of pressure cookers into [improvised explosive devices],” the bulletin warned.

That bulletin cited several plots from 2002 to 2004 to use pressure-cooker bombs in France, India and Nepal. But more recently there have been at least three other instances of would-be terrorists in the West, all of them Islamic radicals, in possession of pressure cookers for reasons that seemed not to involve having friends over for dinner. One was an Army private linked to the 2009 Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, who had reportedly been taking bombmaking tips from al-Qaeda’s short-lived (literally) online magazine Inspire and had various weapons and explosives along with his cooking pot. (The magazine reportedly recommended pressure cookers as explosive devices.) A 2010 suicide bomber in Stockholm had rigged a pressure-cooker bomb that failed to detonate. And as a newer DHS warning about the kitchen devices noted, the failed 2010 SUV bomb in New York’s Times Square was a pressure-cooker device containing 120 firecrackers. The same DHS memo refers to a March 2010 bombing with a pressure cooker at a Western Christian aid agency in Pakistan that killed six people.

Counterterrorism officials are surely well aware of these facts and studying any related leads. But it’s important to bear in mind that the ability to make these bombs is hardly unique to al-Qaeda and its sympathizers. Members of at least one prominent white-supremacist website have shared terrorist tips from Inspire, which one called “highly recommended reading.” Pressure-cooker bombs are also discussed in detail on this anarchist site, which describes how to build what is “affectionately known as a HELLHOUND.”

Oh, now you’ve done it... “home canning” is also a sure sign of being a prepper. Now you’re on two lists.

If you are going to use one for canning, DON'T.
Use a pressure canner. There is a difference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_cooking

"Pressure canners are specifically designed for home canning, whereas ordinary pressure cookers are not recommended for canning due to the risk of botulism poisoning, because pressure canners hold heat and pressure for much longer than ordinary pressure cookers"

Fireworks don’t use black powder. They generally use potassium perchlorate.

"“Who really uses these pressure cookers anyway?”

I do, they are the only way to really cook corned beef. And they will cook potatoes (for mashed potatoes) much quicker then just boiling them. In fact a pressure cooker is a must have for any good kitchen. Plus if you get a bigger one it can be used for canning too!

Dang! I needed to buy one to get ready for canning this season. Now I'll be labeled a terrorist if I do!

Hope nobody holds stock in the makers of pressure-cookers/canners...

Use cash quickly before the background checks begin. Oh and DO NOT google "you know what" to find a good deal. lol

Nice, me too. I also have a smaller one but lost the device that keeps the pressure in the cooker. It still kinda works as a backup when I need to use two cookers.

The answer to pressure cooker bombs.... Background checks, and regulation and register. Pressure cookers are evil.

Confiscation can follow the registration.

“Who really uses these pressure cookers anyway?”

I’ll tell you who! Southerners who love their boiled peanuts & don’t want to stir a hot kettle for four hours or more.

Throw your raw goobers into a pressure cooker, add water & salt, steam for forty-five minutes, wait for the pressure to drop, then enjoy!

I used to cook wild rabbit in a pressure cooker just to be safe.

“Fireworks don’t use black powder. They generally use potassium perchlorate.”

The pieces that have been recovered do not have any bp oxides on them. Even wire used seems to have escaped without any real burn or oxides on it. I don’t think this was K-perchlorate or black powder. Something else.

Black powder ~ that's what I use.

You can add potassium chlorate ~ but but it's generally prohibited for use in fireworks sold on the market.

Potassium perchlorate, traceable to fireworks AFTER they've been fired, is considered a pollutant in water.

I think you are talking about a product of combustion, not the traditional black powder made up of charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate.

There are some cellulose products you can replace for the charcoal but they burn so fast you end up with mostly a pillar of electrons that wants to line up with the local magnetic field ~ and that can be dangerous if you are using it under a forest canopy.
