Forty percent of Colorados class of 2011 enrolled in a Colorado college or university needed remedial education courses in at least one subject in order to catch up to college-level work... in the core subjects of reading, writing or math.
the new figures may jolt school board members, school and college leaders, policy wonks and parents. Thats because the state has changed the way it calculates remediation rates with the aim of making them more accurate. But by doing so, remediation rates for students from many districts look much worse.
...
Using the old methodology a year ago, only 31 percent of Colorado grads required remediation in at least one college course.
Under the new calculations, nearly two-thirds of Colorado high school graduates students enrolled in a state community college needed remedial coursework, compared to almost a quarter of those at a four-year institution. And most of these students required remediation in math or 51 percent. Nearly a third of students needed remediation in writing, and 18 percent needed reading help. About 1 in 3 students need math remediation at the lowest level.
Remediation rates both reflect the quality of a high school curriculum and can portend a students ability to complete college in four years if at all. For low-income students racking up debt to fulfill a college dream, required extra coursework and struggles to finish can create economic hardships. For Colorado employers, high remediation rates could mean fewer qualified and homegrown job candidates.

Colorado failed politics is spreading into education now also.
I graduated in 1976 with virtually no math skills. The only way I satisfied my college math requirement was through a class called Statistics of Political Science.

This is because schools priority is no longer the three R’s, the priority is Socialization, Liberalism, Communism, Fascism, and Self Esteem.
A good education is not so important anyway, since there are no jobs.
Just ignore me, as many are want to do, I’m a conspiracy theorist.
By the state’s elected representation, I would say their failure rate is probably up there with New York’s.
Edit for accuracy.
Thank you.
There is going to be a huge hiccup to this decline is several years, due in large part to the Khan Academy.
The non-profit KA has provided something like 240 million free online, subject oriented, “micro lessons”, out of the 4000 or so they offer.
Basically, it is education without the b.s. Parents love it because it brings their kids up to where their parents think they should be; and the kids love it for the logical reason that it does not waste their time with b.s., but actually teaches them something useful.
Students learn at their own pace, and they actually learn.
It is also of huge future benefit to home schooling, because students have a contrast between efficient education and how the teachers’ unions want teaching to be.
When I was a kid in school here, for example, Columbus was celebrated as a good guy. That hasn't been true for a couple decades now.
“Colorado failed politics is spreading into education now also.”
Colorado failed EDUCATION is spreading into POLITICS now also.
And yet, we are constantly scolded that we are not “investing” enough in education. It’s always, “We need more, More, MORE!”
I fear you have this backward. ???
Colorado used to be rated high in the nation for school ratings. What caused education to fail in the first place? Government controls education therefor the government caused the schools to fail to supplement their failed government.
Liberal control ruins a states educational system; in competent E.O.P. teachers, E.O.P. students, lowered standards for the non E.O.P. The California educational system collapsed under the weight of lowered standards; there is no reason why Colorado’s system shall not follow the same path.
Local school boards more directly, and they are elected in large part by marxist government union employees.
I took algebra I&II, geo, and Trig in HS. When I went to college, Calc and Diff Equations was a snap.
Duuude, just wait until for the new marijuana laws and see what the scores are.
Have you looked at public school lately? Government does not run the schools. The Teachers Union runs the schools. The meaning of “high school ratings” has changed. Look at the candidates for your local school board. How many are former educators (representatives of the Teachers Union, not parents and businesses). If college required feel good about yourself and I can vote for a living remediation wouldn’t be required.
It is very clear that the curriculum has become infiltrated with a liberal social bias that has overcome the ability of the children (citizens) to rationally vote their own best interests.
