I’m inclined to give the uncle a break on this, he knows how things were done in the old country. If he’s looking out for his own akin and that of his family, nothing wrong with that. As long as he didn’t aid/abet or do jihad himself, what would any of us do in his place but deny and distance ourselves from madness?

I did not find the uncle credible. What else could he say? I did not believe him when he said he had not seen the pictures. This story was too big.
Having worked closely with dozens of muslims in high workload conditions, i am more than aware of their propensity to lie or shall we say "omit" the truth. The passion of which the uncle speaks is culturally normal. In fact he is rather calm relatively speaking.
Besides, do not many of us (non Muslims) wonder aloud who among them will condem such behavior? So when one does, speak out, you and others dismiss it out of hand? Kinda hard to move the dialog when that attitude dominates the conversation.
2,2 Billion Muslims in the world, as human beings, am sure there are at least a dozen trying to do good.
