Not a doc, but I don’t think it’s tubes that get stuck through the incision — I think the surgeons actually reach up into the chest with their hands. But I could be wrong.

The tube for draining the lungs is about as big and round like a females middle finger...they have to tape it onto the belly. Too big an incision and the pump will not pump, the smaller the better and depends on whether its a female or male....Its to keep fluids from staying in the lungs, or you'll drown in the fluid in the lungs......(nurse many years ago). sometimes they are sutured at the site where the tube going into the lung Hope that gives you a better understanding about chest tubes.....:O)

You're not a doctor either, I take it. I got the impression this thoracotomy was done not simply to insert a tube for drainage, but for "open chest massage."

If you read the full wikipedia article you will see that thoracotomy is a very extreme, risky, and painful measure. I have to conclude it was done to Bomber 1 as a last ditch attempt to re-start his heart.

You may be right as it mentions Emergency doctor....I was a floor nurse and wasn't part of inserting a chest tube. I have never seen one done on the floor, they have it when admitted to the floor, usually done on accident victims but not the only type of patient..they may also be from surgery with one already in....No I am not a doctor, but used to be a goat herder :o)

Well since a completely un-censored photo of the thoracotomy has flashed around the world by now, I think the docs should make it clear this was an attempted life-saving measure, not a desecration of the Islamist's body.

We know his co-religionists are quick to make such claims -- even though it's perfectly fine by them to mutilate infidels' bodies.
