So does the SWAT Team that will show up for the party a few minutes after the BOOM...

They never did. Of course we loudly apologized to everyone in earshot right after and cleaned up the shards.

How true; much of what my brothers and I did back in the day would now be taken very seriously indeed. I still remember when I set off a pipe cannon (not bomb, only one end capped),using my homemade black powder, through the hedge one Sunday morning, not knowing that the neighbor lady was hanging clothes just on the other side. She didn’t call the cops, just my parents, which was probably worse for me.

We had some long-suffering neighbors, I can tell you. Today, you are right; I’d spend the rest of my life in government custody.

Nitrogen Triiodide?

I hope you didn’t make a big batch...

That’s the stuff you can paint on light switches or doorknobs to scare people. You can also soak little pieces of paper in it and strew them on the floor to scare people as the touch of a feather sets it off...

What did you blow up?

“meh, who hasn’t blown up a milk jug or 2 liter bottle at least once in their life?”

When I was a kid I put calcium carbide into some water in a milk jug, capped and poked a pin hole in it.

Squeezing the jug with a lighter held out produced a nice long, bright acetylene flame.

Until I quit squeezing and the flame sucked back into the jug, BOOM! Singed my eyelashes and my ears range for two days.

-—What did you blow up?

A piece of my desk...
I let it dry out on filter paper

Mom was mad because small fragments of NI3
were scattered into the rug,
making walking in the room exciting and
leaving small purple spots all over the place

Yes, we were a challenge to raise

Okay, thanks! Here in Missouri, the summers are muggy enough that I think I’ll be fine.

Mental note to self: Don’t attempt in the winter time...

Cheers!

Yeah, that’s the problem, now and days; kids can’t be kids without the government getting involved.

Back in my day, a milk jug bomb would get you a stern scolding from the shell-shocked WWII guy down the street, but that’d be about it. Now, the fascists in the FBI and DHS swoop in with guns and black helicopters! Bunch of kill-joys!

I would hate to see what happens to any kid that attempts the flaming tennis ball cannon trick! That was always tons of fun on summer nights.

Cheers

LOL! Yeah, I’d forgotten about that one! Brings back memories of my high school chemistry class. Believe it or not, it was our chemistry teacher who taught us how to make the ammonia/iodine friction explosives.

These days, they’d probably lock up the teacher and throw away the keys, then, deprogram the kids in an Federal internment camp.

Cheers!

Insert commentary on traditional family being replaced by government nanny state.

First thing I noticed was that there is no sex identification, second was that it’s expired, third... these days every I.D. is a photo I.D.

We did the same thing in the chemistry lab in HS after school... (because kids used to do that sort of thing before Facebook).

We had the stuff all over the floor by the end of the session.

Chemistry teacher said the best thing was taking the still wet solution and soaking it into cotton balls, then leaving the wet cotton balls in open door jams to dry.

things you shouldn’t probably mix together

That would be a long list...

I have a feeling a lot of us here "tinkered" with things like that back in HS in the 60's. Hell. We has a "Rocket Club" in my HS. And, I'm not talking Estes. That interest lead me to become a chemical engineer. God forbid a kid in HS today shows an interest in things that go POP today. I hesitate even posting any types of "formula" on the internet. For obvious reasons. I'm just paranoid.
