After years of pretending to be a Navy SEAL and a member of law enforcement, a Rhode Island felon is facing multiple years in California and Rhode Island prisons after finally slipping up because of expired vehicle tags.

William Burley pleaded not guilty to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and in possession of ammunition on Wednesday in Morongo Superior Court. Just the previous week in the same court, Burley, a Yucaipa resident, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a prohibited person in possession of ammunition and receiving stolen property.

Due to special allegations of having a prior strike against him, Burley could be facing four years in a California prison before being sent back to Rhode Island to face imprisonment there

...

Burley had been able to avoid detection for nearly eight years

...

Burley wasn't content just to claim to be a SEAL for free drinks or pats on the back. A team of investigators alleges that Burley used the lie to bilk people out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Somebody had to do it!

Fifty years ago, seems like a lifetime. Oh wait it was a lifetime ago. :)

What’s she doing with my brother, I wonder?

Wife for the stay, they had the option of a husband for every group.

Great people there. When I was there the kids stood atop a pole in sh#t river and dove for coins in water that was so dirty it would be impossible to see anything. The shanties were built out over the rivers edge where raw sewage was a direct deposit.

Monkey meat on a stick was a delicacy that I would enjoy even today.

Yep. WE flew over from VN to Clark and picked up trucks to take to Subic Bay for ammo to take back to CU Chi, or wherever we were at, and while the Marines loaded up our trucks at the gate to the ammo dump we walked over that bridge to the AFP and checked in our weapons and were allowed to go downtown. I swear, I was in that bar at some time and saw those same girls and they DID NOT LOOK alike as some guys say about anyone of some other race. I pretty near spit my beer out looking at that picture. They (being used to Marines and Navy) didn’t recognize our uniforms, and flocked to us like chickens at cracked corn.

Glad he was busted!

I don’t often run into fake vets of any kind, partially due to the vanity license plate on my car.
And because I am just not interested in wasting what little extra funds I have on drunks and liars.

I tried to help the few I have encountered, still keep a spare blanket and jacket in the car, when it gets cold.

I did once run into a fake SEAL.
Professional panhandling sorry SOB was trying to hit up lone women for spare change on his standard local rounds, and chanced to encounter me in a public parking lot.

We exchanged words, before he picked up his prop walker and scurried off down the street to the house down the block where he lives.

I told the other women, the chances of a former SEAL approaching lone women in a parking lot, aggressively demanding money, is at absolute zero.

I hate liars!
