2 accused of setting off Bayonne 'bottle' bombs face more serious charges
Jersey Journal ^ | April 22 , 2013

Charges were upgraded this afternoon against the two men accused of setting off homemade "bottle" bombs in Bayonne on Saturday, officials said.

Christopher Ziobro, 21, of 33rd Street in Bayonne, and his friend Ghaias Mirza, 18, of Courthouse Place in Jersey City, were informed of the upgrade in charges when they made their first court appearance this afternoon in Jersey City. The pair had faced three to five years in prison if convicted, but the new charges expose them to possible sentences of five to 10 years if convicted.

"It's really a matter of horseplay between a couple of kids and obviously, the timing is horrendous," said Mirza's attorney, Jeffrey Garrigan, alluding to the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon and the tense aftermath. On Saturday at 2:32 p.m. police responded to Ziobro's residence after getting a report that kids were throwing bottles from the fire escape and they were exploding, officials said.

I made bottle bombs when I was a kid.

Glass Pepsi bottle (no longer exist) + one burning Jetex tablet (no longer exist) + one plastic champagne stopper.

Did it right in the median between my house and our side street. No one said boo. Of course, I made sure no cars were coming.

I would think the issue of pressing charges might depend in some way on where the bottle bomb was set off, and under what circumstances.

One of my boys did this. Thankfully it was pre 911 when warming his britches prevented any future episodes (and 10 year sentences.). I do not envy parents today.

Ah, heck I grew up in Bayonne. Stuff like this was going on 25+ years ago when I left the rat hole.

Oxygen and acetylene in a 39 gal. trash sack. Rattle windows a mile away. Years ago prior to 911 but would not dare now.

“... The pair also face an arson count and Ziobro is additionally charged with possession of marijuana and weapons offenses related to a switchblade knife and brass knuckles, the complaints say.”

nasty hoodlums.....bombs, brass knuckles, knives.....I guess they just hadn’t managed to get a few guns in the belts.

Throw em away

Did you happen to use Gypsy Rose as a CB Radio handle back in those days in Bayonne?

K4 is/was the most popular type of moble CB Radio antenna as well.

Yes I've heard of that method.

Acetylene a bit hard for me to come by at the age of 13.

I'm glad too. I probably would have tried to pressurize it >shudder<.

I used to buy saltpeter at the local drugstore, pack it in a 35mm (metal) film canister along with a bunch of match heads, attach a fuse made of dried grapevine (which we also smoked, btw) and set it off in the front yard.

This was 1960. I guess I am a terrorist.

No, My cb handle back in the day was “Lucky lady.” I ran a base unit out of my grandmother’s apartment and I earned the name by using a bent wire coat hanger as an antenna; one night I picked up NC Island clear as day. I kid you not.

I just hope that you don't have cleaning supplies and aluminum foil in your house. I don't know whether to ditch the aluminum foil or the toilet bowl cleaner in mine. With all the iron in my water, I think neither. They would get me for the Sudifed in my medicine cabinet anyway. Each is charged with multiple counts of knowingly possessing a destructive device by being in possession of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil and a plastic container of "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner, the criminal complaints say.

I was actually feeling sorry for these guys until I read about the pot, switchblade and brass knuckles that they had. Still they shouldn't be using terrorist statutes to prosecute them. Interesting what one can be charged with but that is a whole 'nother topic.

The old whiskey bottles were better than anything else, the glass was thicker.

You used to be able to buy calcium carbide at any hardware store and make all the acetylene you could ever want. The old coal miners lamps used it.

Ha! Those were the days! I was either Bigfoot or Freebird. Went to the get togethers they had at the old Knights of Columbus.
