A man accused of carrying out a deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon last week was in New Hampshire earlier this year to buy fireworks from a Seabrook store, according to the owner.
Sales records show bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev purchased a reloadable mortar kit from Phantom Fireworks in Seabrook in early February. According to company president Bruce Zoldan, Tsarnaev purchased a Lock and Load kit containing 24 shells.
The kit retails for $199.99. Tsarnaev took home two of the products, using a buy-one-get-one-free deal offered at the showroom in Seabrook, Zoldan said.
The kits are designed to allow consumers to load one shell at a time. Sparking the fuse fires off a shell in about five seconds, igniting a store of gunpowder that projects it approximately 200 feet into the air. At that point, a second detonation occurs, setting off streaks of color.
Zoldan said its conceivable that gun powder contained in the kits could be removed and repurposed for an explosive device, but doing so would be a tremendous amount of work. It would be far easier for someone building a bomb to purchase black powder from a hobby store, he said.

There are also various household chemicals which are capable of powering a bomb. And no, I won’t list list them.
I have seen photographs of the components which were recovered and none of them hhave any of the tell tales of black powder. Not sure what it was but it was not bp.
While I agree with you, there are other household chemicals which, if mixed and delivered properly, could potentially cause many more deaths than a bomb/IED would.
But these sorts of attacks wouldn’t gain the spectacular media coverage that we see lavished on bombers. So they won’t pull off attacks with low intensity, lingering deaths in large numbers. Terr’s will continue to act out for the media.
Terrorists are, always and everywhere, political animals. They need the furor of the non-stop media coverage to gain traction for their causes. If we really want to stop terrorism, then we should make sure the deaths of terrorists are as ignominious and anonymous as we can manage to make them.
