Illinois collected nearly $6 billion more in taxes and fees in 2012 than in the year before.

That's the greatest increase of any state in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's annual State Government Tax Collections report released a few days

Rising from $30.6 billion in 2011 to $36.4 billion in 2012, Illinois' state tax increase largely comes on the backs of workers who saw individual income taxes climb by nearly $4.5 billion, thanks to the first full year of a 2-percentage-point income tax hike.

“This is why people are moving out of the state,” said state Rep. Patti Bellock, a Hinsdale Republican who serves as the minority spokeswoman on the House Appropriations-Human Services Committee. “People are being taxed to death and they don’t want to put up with it because they don’t feel there is a good fiscal policy in our state.”

CHICAGO — Gov. Pat Quinn says Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s visit to try to entice businesses away from Illinois is merely “an escapade” and Illinois can compete with any state.

The Chicago Democrat took some jabs at Perry, who’s in Illinois through Tuesday to lure jobs back to his home state.

“”Rising from $30.6 billion in 2011 to $36.4 billion in 2012, Illinois’ state tax increase”” resulted in layoffs and business closures. The $6 billion in additional taxes collected was used for unemployement payments, welfare payments, etc. In so many words raising taxes was a losing proposition.
