Reid bill would require background checks to purchase explosive powders

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday introduced a bill that would require background checks to be run on anyone buying explosive powder, a reaction to last week's Boston Marathon bombing.

Reid introduced the bill, S. 792, for Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who has been out sick for much of the year. But in a press statement, Lautenberg said the Boston bombing shows that background checks are needed for explosive materials.

"It defies common sense that anyone, even a terrorist, can walk into a store in America and buy explosive powders without a background check or any questions asked," Lautenberg said Tuesday. "Requiring a background check for an explosives permit is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of our communities.

I think what has happened in America is we are becoming slaves to the internet.

This means whenever something happens, some of us “demand a response”. Especially democrats.

That response invariably involves removing yet another freedom.

Do you need to ask? Pols will keep the ball rolling on this until their Chinese masters tell them not to mess with one of their biggest exports.

Sigh; pretty soon there will be a background check to eliminate anyone with an IQ higher than room temperature and who might object to the liberals’ utopia.

What they are saying is because a couple of Islamic terrorists bought fireworks and cut them open to extract the powder every person in the country who reloads ammo will have to go through a background check every time they want to buy smokeless powder.

Gun control. Every day. Every way. By any avenue.
They will never stop.
Vigilance.

They rolled this out through, Lautenberg, 89, the oldest senator who has been sick, set to retire at end of term --so he takes any political damage

Does this mean I’ll need a background check to buy fertilizer I use on my yard? I think there should be background checks on anyone with a (d) behind their name, especially the voters.

Reports are that the bombers bought fireworks and harvested the black powder from them. Are we going to put taggants in bottle rockets now? Background check and 7 day waiting period for sparklers?

No,there have always been people ,even my own mother, whose first reaction to a bad event or just something they don’t like others doing is:”there ought to be a law”.
In the Boston case she was/is upset that instructions for bomb-making are available to everyone;we had a discussion about government censorship in which I tried to explain that preventing that would mean the government would have to read all of everyone’s mail, listen in to all phone calls, and there could be no privacy. Not sure I convinced her.
I work with people who think that way too!I also work with a few real preppers .

They say it takes all kinds, but I sure do wish the percentage of freedom-loving Americans was a lot higher.

checks to be run on anyone buying explosive powder

There it is.

A blogger (Reditt) posted a message the day of the bombing (Monday) that said the event was staged. Said - in advance - the perp would be an older teen or 20 year old. The raid to catch him would be held on Friday. The goal was to tax and regulate gun powder (no powder for ammo = no guns).
I'll try to find the original FR thread with a copy.
