Man walks neighborhood with rifle, scares neighbors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man who walks around his neighborhood with a rifle strapped to his back says he is not a threat to harm anyone, but some neighbors fear he is an incident of vigilante justice waiting to happen.

John Schultz, 19, also wears a bullet-proof vest, carries ammunition and has a knife in a holster as he walks through Walnut Creek, which is off Sunset Road in north Charlotte.

The gun is his grandfather’s 303 British Enfield from WWII.

His walks cause double-takes as well as safety concerns for some. Schultz says others thank him and wave at him.

He says his walks are for exercise and picking up garbage, but also for looking out for his neighbors.

"It's nothing to do with the body armor, it's the person,” Schultz said. “Yes, it just so happens to be there."

“It’s a problem and a concern,” said neighbor Vanessa Aidara.

She says the rifle scares her and scares her kids to the point they won’t play in the yard.

"He could be good without the rifle. The rifle is what scares everybody because why do you need a rifle to pick up trash, get a trash bag,” Aidara said.

Schultz says he's spotted peeping toms and potential burglars in backyards while on his walks, which include in nearby woods, but not on private property.

"I won't brandish a firearm or anything, I won't chase somebody around. I will ask them to stop,” Schultz said.

"Let the police take care of that, not you,” said Aidara.

Aidara says she called police the first time she saw Schultz walking down the street.

“I had a panic attack, didn’t know what was going on,” she said.

She fears Schultz could be an incident of vigilante justice waiting to happen, or someone could target him for violence because he is armed.

"He could get hurt,” Aidara said.

"She's not really wanted to talk to me,” Schultz said.

If she did, Schultz says Aidara would feel different.

He's from a military family, hates garbage, loves his neighborhood and says he isn't looking for a fight.

Aidara wants the rifle-strapped neighborhood walks to stop.

Schutlz’s answer is no.

Police say Schultz isn't breaking any laws because he's not pointing the gun at anyone or threatening anyone with it.

And buying in to their bias isn’t going to change things back.

Don’t perpetuate the hate...

Think about it, this “in the minds” thing is that normalcy bias I mentioned earlier. It isn’t “normal”... Normal being defined as that which everyone does.

It isn’t wrong what he is doing. It isn’t harming anyone or their property. He is within his Rights.

Ergo, any BIAS you have against him and his actions is only in your head. By perpetuating this bias, you are only helping the gun grabbers and not helping to change that bias at all.

Who has killed the most innocent people?

John Schultz or Barack Obama?

In NYC they have 50,000 freaks per square mile, so they need tighter gun control to be all packed in tight like that.

No one would live in NYC if 50,000 guys similar to the one in the video were there. Might be safe with folks exercising there God given rights. That is fine. Just walk around with rifles, flack jackets, and knives without me.

I did a demonstration speech in 8th grade on “how to clean a shotgun.” Yes, I had everything but live rounds.

” You are in a bank and...”

Serious answers...Depends where I am. I’m from upstate NY originally. That happened from November to March every year and no one batted an eye. If it’s Phoenix in July, I am not going to wait to find out if he has a light allergy.

It depends. In the case of the gun guy, no one mentions any bizzare behavior from him other than their fear of his gun. He is no random thug in a strange hood. He’s someone his neighbors know and ‘one’ freaked because she is a lib.

“If you see a driver swerving from one side of his lane to another late at night on the highway, do you call the police? I do.”

Yes. Those actions present a clear danger. A man exercizing his constitutional rights does not. Only others fear due to lib indoctrination against a once common and still legal practice is a problem with the gun guy. And that problem is people like her vote FOR gun grabbers.

“If you see a guy in a Wallmart parking lot working a slim jim into a vehicle door obviously trying to gain access to a locked vehicle without a key, would you at least suspect he might be breaking into it to steal something? What if he locked his keys in his car and keeps a tool hidden in his bumper?”

As there is a ‘potential crime’ here I tell security. It is up to Walmart to sort it out with him and the cops. There is no potential crime with an apparently sane man known to his neighbors exercizing his rights.

And there is only a problem at all BECAUSE people refuse to abide by the Constitution to begin with. The bottom line is that we as conservatives must fight for ALL our rights at ALL times. And if a lefty gets their snit in a fit, Good. Only by exercizing our rights and defending that exercize can we ever KEEP those rights.

I can recall a time when folks carried rifles and shotguns hanging from a rack in the back window of their pickup truck, and left the windows down and the doors unlocked when going into a store or to church.

An armed society is a polite society.

I’m told that the AR-15 is THE go-to gun for coyotes. Wouldn’t know personally, of course. ;-)

“He wouldn’t be walking my neighborhood.”

Sure he would. If you lived in Texas no one would notice. If you lived in Boston the local would cower into their homes and do nothing. Either way, he walks around just fine.

LOL! That was my reaction too.

Not sure a goofy-looking guy carrying a hunting rifle would even get noticed much around here. Especially during hunting season. Heckuva thing to do to a nice piece, though.

Mr. Heston directly helped get the 1968 Gun Control Act enabled and claimed no one should own AK-47. Mr. Heston was a liberal pussy.

The British military sling is pretty comfortable if you sling the gun African-style. (Quick as lightning, too.) I’d choose a lighter gun for bush tracking, though. Maybe a MKV jungle carbine...
