Starting May 1, the European Union will be collecting an additional 26 percent import duty on all womens jeans made in the United States, on top of the jeans current 12 percent duty.
The increased duty will be a big slap in the face to the Southern California apparel industry, known for its high-end premium denim jeans made primarily in and around the Los Angeles area.
This will not only affect the brands that make jeans but all the wash houses and sources that support the industry, said Ilse Metchek, president of the California Fashion Association. When you do the numbers, it is not just about dollars but about jobs.
Metchek fears that many blue jeans brands will shift their production from Southern California to Mexico to get around the added duty. They wont be just shifting production of womens jeans to Mexico, but all the entire collection, she said.
Calls made to various Los Angeles jeans manufacturers left them stunned. Many had not heard about the new duty. Certainly it will affect our business. Our products are expensive, said Sam Ku, vice president and creative director for the high-end blue jeans label AG Adriano Goldschmied, made at the Koos Manufacturing factory in Los Angeles.
Ku said the company has distributors in Great Britain, Germany and Italy for its European sales of AG Adriano Goldschmied jeans that retail for 200 euros, or $260. This is definitely something we have to look into and discuss, Ku said.

Europe is broke, and doesn't seem to mind risking a trade war later if they can grab a little quick cash now. I think the 38% duty matches what China assesses on imported luxury goods. Perhaps that number is becoming the new "world standard."
thought it said eu slaps big booty at first blush
Fine. I see big duty on women’s jeans every single day and I don’t like it.
I wonder what import duties the EU is imposing on the massive amount of Chinese junk imported into the EU?
Maybe the fems should lose the big butt and wear guy jeans?
When a Company states that their Jeans are expensive and that they cost $260 dollars a pair I have a hard time feeling sorry for them.
Jeans are Jeans and anything over $50 bucks a pair is robbery, over $100 dollars a pair is just a plain rip off..
People are nuts to buy a label. My idea of clothes is to cover my butt , not to advertise a label for a company getting rich by ripping off the rich.
“Slap”
“Big Duty”
“Women”
“Jeans”
Things that make you go “Hmmmm...”
Clothes are way overpriced (as are mattresses) and i wonder why.
That’s what our international business and government leaders call free trade, when their foreign nations of choice do it. And it’s done on many other products.
Mattresses are surely overpriced. I paid %650 for one, it was so bad they took it back, the next was $1,000 dollars and it sucks, Serta.

I’d never pay $50 for jeans! I’ve bought my Wranglers at Wall*Mart for many years and never paid more than $12-18. Denim is very long lasting! Grew up wearing Lee’s, but they are more difficult to find and pricey now.
LOL I need the relaxed fit.
But I amnot all that fond of Jeans actually. I am more fond of khakis, and I find them at Vintage Values and Goodwill for about $8,00
My cousin makes fun of me for buying there, but once in a while I find some real bargains.
Why Does The Problem Exist?
Some will point to trade laws enacted in the 1970s that prohibit manufacturers from setting a price floor. A price floor is a minimum selling price. The reason for a price floor set by a manufacturer is to keep profits high for their resellers, which helps keep profits high for the manufacturer.
With the new law, many discount mattress retailers opened up and undercut the big department stores. Naturally, the department stores were not happy about this so they started to negotiate with the manufacturers. The outcome of this was for the manufacturers to provide exclusive models to the department stores, to set them aside from the discount retailers. These exclusivity deals eventually spread and have lead to the very unique situation we have today were just about every retailer sells exclusive models, completely snuffing the ability for a consumer to comparison shop.
Beyond the Name, What Makes Their Mattress Better?

Thank God all i need to use is is a cheap 1-1/2 inch camping type foam pad, and a pillow under my hips. I am short and have tight limbs (and conscience) and realized many years ago that i slept as well or better in a sleeping bag on a carpeted floor than on a mattress which i used to use. I used to have back pain, but thank God that is gone.
I usually do not go to bed till i am very tired, and ask forgiveness for my failings and usually sleep well (unless i am not tired enough or ate too late).
Some people say a $20 Coleman air mattress is the best they used, covered with bedding.
I prayed and pursued a “lot of” black jeans, and one day came across an exceptional price of 5 for less than $20 (”buy it now”) in like new condition. Hard to find 29” waist though.
