DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republicans are struggling to recruit strong U.S. Senate candidates in states where the party has the best chances to reclaim the majority in Washington.
It's a potentially troubling sign that the GOP's post-2012 soul-searching could spill over into next year's congressional elections.
The vote is more than 18 months away, so it's early. But candidate recruitment efforts are well underway, and thus far Republicans have been unable to field a top-tier candidate in Iowa or Michigan.
In those two Mideast swing states, the GOP hopes to make a play for seats left open by the retirement of veteran Democrats.
The GOP is facing the prospect of contentious and expensive primaries in Georgia and perhaps West Virginia, Republican-leaning states where incumbents, one from each party, are not running again.
President Barack Obama is not on the ballot, so Republicans may have their best chance in years to try to retake the Senate. Changing the balance of power in the Senate would put a major crimp on Obama's efforts to enact his agenda and shape his legacy in the final two years of his presidency.
Republicans need to gain six seats to gain control of the Senate. Democrats will be defending 21 seats to Republicans' 14, meaning the GOP has more opportunities to try to win on Democratic turf.
Only recently, Republicans were reveling in the fact that several veteran Democrats were retiring in states where the GOP had not had a chance to win in decades.
Last week, Democrat Max Baucus of Montana became the latest to announce his retirement in a state that typically tilts Republican.

The only political power have left (if it can be called that) is to either vote third party, or not vote at all. Oh, and I've grown way past weary of guys like Rush always warning us that “Third parties just don't work.”
Hey Rush, please explain to us what being good Republicans over the past few years has gotten us...hmmm? McCain, Romney, Boehner, Cantor, Cornyn, Graham, the refusal to repeal ObamaCare! It's gotten us nowhere! I've taken it in the shorts for the last time from the GOPe and Rove types! No more! I gave away every bit of self respect I had when I had to vote for Romney this past election.
The GOPe has caused we Conservatives to be at each others throats. There's still bad blood in FR from this past election. Sorry, but the only political power I have left is to vote third party, write in, or not vote. If the conservatives in the House like want to, they can come along for the ride, but I've lubed up for the last time for Rove, Luntz, and the wizards of dumb! Let these idiots beg the precious independents, moderates and Latinos they love so much!

The real question to ask is WHY did Levin and Harkin both decide to bail? The answer is that they both figure that the GOP will take the Senate, and they don'[t want to spent their last term in office in the MINORITY..
All Republican candidates need to be asked a few key questions, the most important of which is, “Will you agree to join the boycott of Karl Rove and his organization?”

Washington has to meddle. They’re scared to death they might end up with another Sarah Palin if they don’t. That’s why they’ll lose. I haven’t missed an election in 40 years but can’t wait to stay home next time if they but up another milquetoast candidate.

The GOP is acting like more of the same, hoping somehow it will turn out differently this time.
Gays. Immigration. All the same things which we as a party got on the wrong side of last time, are all in the mix this time as well.
GOP wake up. Stop outsourcing US jobs. Bring back jobs to America right now.
Do not cave to gays. Do not cave on immigration.
But we need jobs. American jobs. Now.
Why would we end up with another Sarah Palin?

Breaking news! AP! Iowa and Michigan have been moved to the “mideast!”
“LOL The USA doesn’t have a region called the “Mideast” at all.”
Maybe they were thinking of Dearborn, MI. That would probably considered both Midwest and Mideast.
I see the question as being one of the really important questions that candidates need to be confronted with, along with the other real hot button issues of conservatives.
The real one would be fine by me. I can only hope.
