North Korea has announced that an American tourist is to be tried on charges of plotting to overthrow the government, a crime that carries a possible death penalty. The case against Korean-American Kenneth Bae, who has been imprisoned in North Korea since early November, could further stoke tensions between Pyongyang and Washington. …

Bae, 44, was arrested in Rason, a special economic zone in North Korea’s far north-eastern region bordering China and Russia, according to official state media. The exact nature of his alleged crimes has not been disclosed, but North Korea accuses Bae, described as a tour operator, of seeking to overthrow North Korea’s leadership. …

South Korean rights workers said the authorities may have taken issue with some of Bae’s photographs, including those of homeless North Korean children, Reuters reported. …

Would it be impolite to ask just what this tourist was doing in N.K. in the first place? Tourism? This story is a bit off.

Who in their right mind would want to tour NK? This is fishy.

The Guardian’s always a bit off, and that’s being generous.

Why should we even be reading about this guy in the first place? Hey! It’s North Korea folks.

Anyone who goes there should be aware of the fact that they can arrest you for anything....especially if you are a bleeding heart “do gooder” who thinks they can change the world.

The article is not worth the ink it is printed in.

There’s a bus tour you can take from the South. I was going to do it the last time I was in Seoul, but the schedule was too tight and I couldn’t.

I think I’d rather tour Mexico in a new pick-up truck.

Liberal lunatics regularly backpacked across the border into North Vietnam. Their purpose was to hang with the brother communists and show solidarity. They were all executed as spies. Those people held as American spies for backpacking onto Iran were also from Democratic fellow traveler families. Getting lots of tattoos and flying to North Korea (Denis Rodman) are both clearly signs of mental illness.

American liberals, who have drunk the multicultural Kool-Aid simply can’t fathom that the object of their fetish (Iran, North Korea, Palestine, Pakistan) is not what they believe it to be.

Not my problem...it’s his problem. You want to drive drunk, do drugs, go on vacation in N Korea? Enjoy. Just don’t ask me to pay for bailing you out pal. Life is about choices and accountability. I sense the press is working on a new story here, maybe Nancy Grace will pick it up and Geraldo will go over and interview the “tourist.”

The Guardian is more communist than the New York Times. “good or better” is meaningless here, sort of an oxymoron. It’s always good to look at the source before reading, and choose to avoid the propaganda.

Westerners and South Koreans who go to NK for any reason at all are voluntarily making themselves hostages to the Norks or demonstration examples or whatever the Norks determine is in their immediate interest. My sympathy for them is limited. They know what the possibilities are.

Yea, that’s smart. Be a tourist in N Korea? It is kind of like the LIB morons who were hiking on the Afghan/Iran border a couple years ago. Real smart there, I tell ya.

I know that and you don’t have to tell me to read the source.
