Another 800 million euros has been added to the mountain of unpaid taxes within just one month, as, according to data released on Friday by the Finance Ministry, from 1.37 billion euros at the end of February, by the end of March, the total amount of tax arrears generated within 2013 had skyrocketed to 2.17 billion euros.

That phenomenon is attributed not only to the cash problems faced by the majority of taxpayers, but also to the fact that many had been waiting to hear about the new payment schemes for debts to the state, which have only just been announced.

Tax collection in March fetched no more than 746 million euros, while the fresh arrears of 800 million brought the total amount of debts to the state to 57.2 billion euros. This includes 9 billion in the old debts of bankrupt companies and taxpayers, while another 3.67 billion concerns old debts of state corporations and utilities, municipal enterprises and other corporations in the broader public sector.
