I have been told that. That Prince William could be the anti-Christ. Actually I think Obama is more of a runner up for the Anti-christ than Prince william.

Obama is hated by way too many people to ascend to the worldly throne... who really hates the British Royal Family? I mean their weddings/funerals get huge ratings in this country sad to say.. William and Harry had a mother the ‘world’adored... and mourned... and they have a father most may not like because of what happened to their mother... prince charles is ‘goofy’ and harry is ‘running wild’... William appears to ‘have his act together’... wife and soon little one on the way... they are a perfect lionized celebrity couple with a pedigree that screams ‘worship us you lowly secular humanists’ ... :) but I could be way off too....

Pardon me, “climb on the throne” - does that meet with YOUR approval?

Isn’t there a succession system that’s been in place roughly forever? The King/Queen is dead, long live the King/Queen? Short of abdicating, I think that succession is automatic to Chaz and, upon his death, to Wills.

I don’t see Chaz going along with a plan that would bypass him. He’ already 64 (which probably mean another 30 years at least to go with that family’s longevity).

Since search and rescue is being sold, it will no longer be a military endeavor. He won’t be working for the private company, so I see no reason why he shouldn’t move on.

I am certainly no expert in this area, but it is my understanding that, while the queen is living, it is her choice whether or not to pass the crown to her son. I do not think she is obligated to hand it over to Chuckles.

Perhaps she is hoping Hank shapes up so she can pass it to him.

Maybe some FReeper with some knowledge in this matter will enlighten us....

Certainly. I used to be a protocol officer in the Royal Australian Navy (weird title, I know, and not my official role, but it's what I did) and I had to know this stuff. I also have the good fortune to be friends with the Prince of Wales (through his brother, the Duke of York, who I served with). I know the Duke of Cambridge (Prince William) reasonably well. I have met the Queen on a number of occasions, although would not say I know her in any real sense.

The law of succession is quite simple and comes from Acts of Parliament. The Prince of Wales as eldest legitimate son of the Monarch (and eldest legitimate child as well, which will become relevant with upcoming changes to the law) is Heir Apparent and will become King at the instant his mother dies. The Queen has no power to stop this from happening even if she wanted to. He has no power to resist even if he wanted to. He could, in theory, choose to abdicate immediately but he would still be King from the moment of his mother's death until the Instrument of Abdication took effect.

The only way he can be removed from the line of succession is by his death, by becoming a Roman Catholic, or (for the moment, but this is also being changed at the moment) by marrying a Roman Catholic, or by an Act of Parliament altering the succession.

He cannot be 'passed over' in favour of his son in any other way.

The Monarch does not have control over the succession.

In theory, if, say, for example, the Queen reached over 100 and the Prince of Wales was over 80, and he felt unable to commit to taking the Crown, the Queen and the Prince of Wales could ask Parliament to pass an Act removing him from the line of succession, and if there was a good reason for it, Parliament would be quite likely to agree, but nothing like that is on the horizon at present.

The Prince of Wales, in my opinion, will make a good King, when it falls to him. He is a good man, dedicated to his country. He also wishes for his son to have as normal a life as possible for as long a life as possible, and that means keeping his son off the throne as long as possible. The Prince of Wales has had to be ready to reign since he was only about four years old when his mother became Queen. While his is a life of immense privilege, it is also one where a person has only limited choices. He wants his sons to have more freedom than he did - in the case of William, he wants him to have a life before he has to become King.

In answer to another question that has been raised, the Duke of Cambridge will complete his term of service before leaving the RAF. If he is contemplating leaving, it will be at the end of his current expected term of service. Because of the changes in aerial search and rescue, there may be a normal opportunity for early release available to him as it would be to any other officer, but he will not be given special treatment. I've served alongside a royal - and I'm seen them in their ceremonial military roles as well. When they are actually serving, they serve pretty much as anybody else does under the same conditions. One reason so many go into the service is because it's one of the few places where being royal matters little - "I do not care if you are a Prince, Lieutenant. I am a Captain." - and so they can have a normal life.

Correct. The line of succession is currently determined primarily by the Act of Settlement of 1701 and the Act of Union of 1800 (theoretically modified by His Majesty's Declaration of Abdication Act 1936 although as Edward VIII/The Duke of Windsor died childless, that is totally theoretical), but even these centuries old laws merely restate the common law principles going back centuries further. There will shortly be modifications made (giving females equal standing with males, and removal of a restriction on those married to Catholics), but, yes, the Heir as designated by birth becomes King or Queen the instant the previous monarch dies. They can choose to abdicate if they wish, but would still be King or Queen until the Instrument of Abdication took effect.

I don’t see Chaz going along with a plan that would bypass him. He’ already 64 (which probably mean another 30 years at least to go with that family’s longevity).

I just addressed this in my previous messages - the Prince of Wales will, unless completely infirm, in my view, take the Crown for two reasons. The first is that it is his duty - and he has always done his duty to his country. The second is that he wants his son to have as normal a life as possible for as long as possible - and that means keeping him off the throne as long as possible. He may also, certainly, want the chance to do the job, he's been waiting all his life for - but that is less important than the other two reasons. And people need to remember that even if he does want to be King - it can only happen if something, as a loving son, he desperately does not want to happen for as long as possible happens first.

Well, Ed, I was right about this part. Look at post #26.

Thanks, naturalman. FReepers are so smart. I always learn something here. Apparently, I am not so smart, as I believed what I apparently read somewhere about the succession. Thank you, again, for taking the time to correct my misconception (even though I snarked on your friend).
