Now that rifle has a long history as an assault weapon.

Yep, right up there with the Mauser and the Brown Bess.

Of course, it can be a defensive weapon as well. I believe the Finns were using it when one of their officers quipped: "So many Russians! Where will we bury them all?"

Some say that the humble Mosin Nagant has clamed more lives than any other single weapon in history. That is quite a feat considering the competition. And the Finnish Mosin is the cream of the crop.
