Ideally, Jason Collins shouldn’t be news
Washington Examiner ^ | 04/30/2013 | Philip Klein

It’s the Monday after the NFL draft and the NBA playoffs are in full swing. But today, Jason Collins, a journeyman basketball payer who averaged just over 1 point per game in the past season, is the leading sports story. The reason is that Collins declared himself the first openly gay male athlete in a major American team sport.

The announcement garnered an outpouring of support, as admirers praised Collins for being willing to come out as gay in a field in which homosexuality has been particularly stigmatized. Others didn’t think Collins' announcement should be much of a story.

I find myself in both camps. I recognize the significance of Collins’ decision and admire the courage required to make it. But I also hope that his announcement will help pave the way for a time when it isn’t a major news story when a professional athlete reveals his sexual orientation, because it doesn’t really matter.

Though the decision of an aging NBA center to come out as gay is a big deal now, ideally, it shouldn’t be.

Jason Collins is news because Obama needs a backup “body man” in case Reggie Love isn’t available.

What should be a big deal is that his genetically identical twin brother is not gay. Either they made different choices or one is a mutant.

We need BDSM folks to come out and demand special treatment. And every other sex fetish group.

Then sue when they do not get equal treatment.

Why is it significant for a homosexual to say he is a homosexual?

Ideally we should never have to use the word ‘ideally’. BUT. And likewise, we should never have to use the word ‘But’.

“How does he prove it?”

Drop his pants in front of the 0 in a secure location and see what HE does with it.

Answer by example:

I have a sister in law who ‘became’ a white militant lez with a girlfriend who was black. The only black woman in her town.

All conversations and situations became about ‘gay’ from that point on. Including about the trials and sufferings of the poor interracial gay couple in small town white America...Until her girlfriend left her for a dude.

Then she was suddenly straight again. The answer of course is special treatment and attention.

Why is it significant for a homosexual to say he is a homosexual?

Because the liberals are pushing homosexuality, and they will use anyone to further the cause. Since there has never been an openly homosexual athlete in any of the major team sports in America, who was open about it when he played, the media decided to make this a big story.

An irony is that his contract is up, and he may not play in the NBA again.

And, since gay activists are very big on “finger in the eye” types of events, they want to demonstrate that there are homosexuals even in the “macho” world of professional sports. You know how that goes, the old stereotype that homosexual males are effeminate and wouldn’t be found in athletics.

“I recognize the significance of Collins’ decision and admire the courage required to make it.”

Coming out as gay isn’t courageous, dying at an overheated machine gun after 7 hours of hell in Benghazi is.

Ha!

When I was in the Army, soldiers would occassionally joke that they were gay, and needed to leave the Army.

I would always tell them that they had to prove it first.

They never did.

I heard on the radio that Obama called him to congratulate him.

Think about that - the President of the United States made that phone call.

The world is upside down.

"But today, Jason Collins, a journeyman basketball payer who averaged just over 1 point per game in the past season, is the leading sports story."

It wasn't the lead story on any of the sports shows I listened to on the way to work this morning. They all started with NBA playoffs followed by a 19 inning baseball game and didn't get to the homo basketball player until well into the show.

Frankly gay basketball players are not on my Top 100 list of things to be concerned about. In truth I just don’t spend time worrying about anyone’s sex life, other than mine.

Oh yes he will! You think the teams aren’t scrambling for him this second to avoid the homophobe lawsuits? The Wizards likely offered him a big signing ‘package’ to come back.

And the hell will descend on them from the white house if they do not.

Which is why he ‘came out’ to begin with.

You would worry more if a militant gay was teaching one of your kids.

In many stories, he is hailed as the first sports figure in a major sport to come out.

If I were Martina Navratalova, I’d be upset at the slight on me and my sport.

If I was Renee Richards, I’d also wonder where they’ve been the last 30 years

There is actually an entire league of gay tennis players (the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Association).

But I guess most of the sports world is now saying tennis isn’t a real sport.
