A bid to legalize same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland has failed.
Unionists voted down a motion at Stormonts Assembly which called on the power-sharing ministerial Executive to legislate.
Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK without marriage rights for gay couples.
The issue sparked impassioned debate, with protests outside the legislature and verbal clashes between campaigners in favor of or opposed to the change. Amnesty International has warned of a likely legal challenge.
Church leaders had urged Assembly members to vote against the legislation, with the Catholic church asserting marriage was between a man and a woman.

Northern Ireland is part of the U.K., right? South is it’s own country?
That was the case until 1972 (officially), or if you like 1992 (effectively). The whole shebang is owned by the EU now, and no member of the EU is “its own country”. But yes, the six counties of Northern Ireland are still part of the UK whereas the Republic of Ireland is supposedly its own state.
On this issue, right now, Northern Ireland is pretty much on its own.
Thanks. And just looked up the Wiki entry on Republic of Ireland. It’s apparently a very prosperous nation.
Where are the Protestant/Catholic wars occurring in the country?
Nowhere, since the Good Friday agreement (referring to Northern Ireland, where all the violence save a few terror attacks in the Republic, and some on the island of Britain, occurred).
The Republic of Ireland’s economy got depressed by being part of the eurozone; they have basically sold what’s left of their remaining sovereignty for easier bailout loan terms. The EU is trying to pressure them to raise their corporate tax rate, which will further damage their economy. Socio-politically, they are heading leftward with a vengeance, despite being a nominal Catholic country.
No wonder here. The IRA spent decades killing other Christians just to give their country to the muslim/left.
There are still flare ups of violence, mainly by “splinter” groups on the Catholic side, and during “marching season”.
Yes, the so-called “Real IRA”. Are they trying to say that they think they somehow are deeper into the “one struggle” thing with the PLO than the older IRA?
They may very well be the type to want a British/Protestant free NI, not unlike the PLO/Hamas scum re Israel. A few years ago, the IRA hoisted a PLO flag over their “HQ’s” and the British guys hoisted the Israeli flag over their’s in response...
Well, people like Bobby Sands were preaching about how they wanted a united Ireland that was a “socialist republic”. The ones carrying out terror attacks now have to be at least as bad as the drug gangs down in Mexico that are allied with groups like Hezbollah, to be sure.
