Morning-after pill to be made available over the counter (for as young as 15)

On April 30, the Food and Drug Administration approved over the counter sale of the morning-after pill Plan B One-Step to all women aged 15 and older.

Plan B One-Step is the name of the drug, made exclusively by Teva Women's Health, Inc., which acts as an emergency contraceptive which reduces the possibility of pregnancy when taken up to three days after sexual intercourse. It is taken as a single-dose 1.5 mg tablet of levonorgestrel.

Pharmacies and retailers with on-site pharmacies will have the drug on shelves, and those wishing to purchase it will have to provide proof of age. Teva has agreed to have a security tag placed on all Plan B One-Step cartons to prevent theft, according to the FDA.

Plan B is the same drug – levonorgestrel – as Plan B One-Step, but is taken in two doses of 0.75 mg per tablet. Plan B, which is available from generic manufacturers, requires a prescription for women under the age of 17.

Ella, another emergency contraceptive, is prescription-only.

In Dec. 2011, Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled the FDA’s plan to make the morning-after pill available over the counter and with no age limits citing “significant cognitive and behavioral differences” between older adolescent girls and the youngest girls of reproductive age.

Today's release claimed that a study submitted by Teva showed that women 15 years and older are able to understand the drug is not for routine use and does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

On April 5, a federal judge in Brooklyn, Edward Korman, had ordered the FDA to allow over the counter sale of Plan B to women of all ages, and/or make Plan B One-Step available without age restrictions.

The FDA said that today's approval of Plan B One-Step is independent of Korman's ruling, which caused outcry last month from pro-life and Catholic groups nationwide over perceived health risks to young women.

Dr. Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life called Korman's decision an opportunity for “big abortion industry to gamble with young girls’ health,” and the New York Catholic Conference called the ruling a “recipe for disaster.”

Can they get a shot of penicillin with that morning after pill, too? Kind of like a chaser.

Kids are not allowed to take Aspirin at school, but they are allowed to buy a pill that causes abortion at age 15, without a prescription and without parental permission or notification? Leftists have an interesting perspective on the world.

women 15 years and older are able to understand the drug is not for routine use and does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

Why would you think that?

They don't seem to be able to understand that sex sometimes leads to pregnancy.

More “fundamental transformation” for the ObamaNazis. I guess if you’re going to teach them the mechanics of intercourse in Head Start, they’re going to need something.

The media will be very careful not to report on the deaths that result from this. Not just of the pre-born people, but of the people 15 and up.

And the men and boys who abuse them as objects for sexual pleasure understand that this is a perp's dream come true. Now they can abuse minors and pump them full of chemicals to minimize chances of disclosure. This is shameful.

How many 15-year-olds can provide proof of age?

It will be interesting to see what happens if a minor girl suffers some sort of physical malady as a result of using the ‘morning after pill’. A lawsuit would be interesting to watch.

An amusing contradiction in the “Sex Superbug” article - it claims the new strain of gonorrhea can cause death in days, but people should get screened when entering a new relationship because they might not know they have it.

We already know that a significant percentage of abortions are coercive. Does anyone really think that perps and older boyfriends won't be insisting on their girls taking these fairly regularly? Or that some girls won't take them more often than necessary out of an abundance of caution?

Ever notice that it's always the girls we pump full of chemicals to make them ready objects for men and boys? We never pump our boys full of drugs. We just do it to our girls. This makes me so angry!

“Kids are not allowed to take aspirin at school”.

I don’t think most of them can even purchase a lot of over the counter meds. I had a sinus headache from hades last week and asked my older teen to get me the over the counter stuff (not the stuff behind the counter). They refused to sell it to him because he wasn’t an adult. I do know Nyquil isn’t sold to teens either. I guess sinus medicine is a no but aborting a baby is a yes.

So what happens when the boyfriend slips her the morning after pill to ease his financial pain?

Available anywhere without a prescription. What could go wrong?

At what point will these sick individuals make their move to legalize adults dating children so they will no longer be stigmatized? We live in an upside down world.

We have NO IDEA what the long-term consequences of young girls who are still developing using this drug multiple times are. Expect to see lots of TV commercials from shyster lawyers in coming years.

While that may be true, that is just as possible under current law - even before this change, Plan B is over-the-counter (though kept behind the counter, like Sudafed), so the perps and older boyfriends can already get it themselves.

so what happens if the 15 yr old doesn’t take the pill until she is 4 weeks or 6 weeks pregnant? Are there any side effects? any studies? If a 15 or 16 yr old is trying to hide a pregnancy makes since to me that they would just assume this pill could take care of the issue after 4 weeks...
