Washington Post Column: Jason Collins’s religious critics need to practice what they preach
Washington Post ^ | 04/30/2013 | Mike Wise

Posted on 04/30/2013 7:27:42 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

With Jason Collins clearing one of big-time team sports’ last barriers to equality, it’s time to extend an olive branch to some of the other people who also came out Monday: Let’s give it up for the heterosexual religious zealots, some of whom let us know their true, authentic selves.

It takes a lot of Old Testament moral certainty to have such strong conviction against a 7-foot NBA journeyman’s sexuality, especially after Collins had the guts to become the first active male athlete in a major team sport to say he’s gay — which, by the way, is so universally accepted it took just 38 years since a former Redskin named Dave Kopay became the first gay player to come out after he was retired.

While many voiced support for (or at least tolerance of) Collins in the aftermath, some used his historic announcement to call homosexuality a sin and an open rebellion toward and otherwise trumpeted their bigotry under the guise of “religious beliefs.” To them, we say this: We don’t think you will burn in the eternal hellfire of damnation just because you think gay people will. We know that God loves you, too, and we await your healing and your delayed entry into the 21st century.

It’s true that we choose our religion and can decide how to treat others in ways that no one chooses his or her sexual orientation (because, really, given the environments in most locker rooms, what athlete would choose to be gay?) And because we’re free to make those choices, all people are entitled to their own interpretations of the Book of Leviticus. They’ll all be allowed to watch games like any paying customer. If some choose to wear their straightness on their sleeves by participating in the mixed-sex-only KISSCam,

MIKE WISE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE’S WRITING ABOUT

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on Friday, 15 March 2013 10:30. Posted in Washington Redskins

A fair number of sports fans in the Washington, D.C. area do not care for Post sports columnist Mike Wise. They didn’t like his short-lived and now-defunct radio show and they don’t like his columns. When they really want to twist the knife, Wise’s detractors point to his Twitter-hoax — posting an intentionally false report about Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on the social media site — that earned him a suspension from the Post. I don’t really have strong opinions about Wise. I ignored his radio show and find his columnis predictably inconsistent — basically average for a big city sports columnist in the United States. I’d like to see the Post hire a better columnist than Wise, but understand they’re just as likely to hire someone worse, so I don’t have a problem with him in his current position.

But Mike Wise is seriously out of his depth with today’s column in the Post, in which he declares the Redskins are to blame for the salary cap penalty of $36 million imposed by the NFL a year ago — the penalty that cost the team the chance to upgrade the secondary last year and probably this year, too, as well as leading to the loss of LB Lorenzo Alexander and perhaps Fred Davis, as well.

Wow! So Jason Collin’s identical twin brother is straight! AND, he was shocked to learn that Jason is a homosexual. This doesn’t bode well for the, “Homosexuality is genetic” crowd.

Is he a successful basketball player because he is seven foot or because he is gay? If being gay has nothing to do with his playing basketball he should shut the hell up, keep his personal life to himself and play basketball. Interesting how all these A**holes have a different standard when it comes to dealing with someone like Tim Tebow, with him they demand he keep his personal life and opinions to himself!

I’m waiting for the day when a professional Hockey player outs himself as a homo.

There will be blood.

What bothers me most about all this is that it seems like every day, homosexuality is being thrust into our faces. It's always, “look at me. I'm gay.” Frankly, I also wouldn't want to hear some heterosexual celebrity or sports figure tell the world how many times a day he banged his wife. The gays, however, seem to want to constantly put their personal lives out there. And the media is an active participant. The media won't report in Benghazi or the Gosnell trial, but it will give front page/top story coverage of some 2-bit ballplayer's sex life.

Gay sex is deviant and perverse. Since gay sex acts is what defines a gay man, that means that gays are perverse sexual deviants.

Oral sex following anal sex? GROSS! Rimming? GROSS! Look it up.

Admitting to being gay isn't something to be proud of. Do not touch or take any chances of sharing bodily fluids with them. No chance of that in a BB game.

Does this guy kiss his mother on the mouth? Just wondering. Gay men are walking cesspools of STDs and AIDS. Is this a group you should be proud to be part of?

Hate speech? HARDLY. Just the TRUTH.

all people are entitled to their own interpretations of the Book of Leviticus.

Wrong, no one is entitled to interpret the bible to mean what he or she wants or doesn't want it to mean in order to make it conform to their own views on whatever the issue at hand may be. The biblical condemnation of homosexual acts as sin is as clear as any combination of words can be, and it isn't limited to Leviticus or to the Old Testament. The biblical account of the perverted sex acts of Sodom's homosexual residents are so clearly shown to be grossly sinful that the word "sodomy" is still commonly used to identify that abomination. That particular sin is also cited, among others, in the 1st chapter of Romans (New Testament) as one of the most prevalent sins of the antediluvian people, and as the primary reason for God's almost total annihilation of that ancient civilization with a world-wide flood that killed every human being except righteous Noah and the 7 other members of his family.

There are several other passages in both the NT and OT that condemn homosexual acts as sin, but it really doesn't matter how many times it's repeated because God only has to say a thing once in order for it to be as true as if He had said it a thousand times. I can't say with absolute certainty that an inborn tendency to desire sex with persons of the opposite sex constitutes sin in God's book, but there is no question at all as to whether or not the actual practice of those acts is as sinful as any other act identified as sin in both the Old and New Testaments.

The good news, aka the Gospel, is that Jesus Christ's atoning death on the cross paid the death penalty for ALL sin of ALL men and women who repent of their sins, accept Jesus Christ as Lord, and believe in his/her heart that God the Father raised Him from the dead, as per Romans ch 9 v 10. Many thousand of homosexuals have become Christians and have been delivered from their former perversion. But the God-hating American media and the non-Christians who are now the majority in America insist that homosexuality is irreversible, that those who claim to have been delivered from their former perverse desires are lying, and that most of them have resumed practicing their former homosexual lifestyle.

It is NOW OK for Collins to tweet photos of his genitals to women; he can open up new doors next week by having sex with a horse; Collins may want to broaden his appeal by doing a threesome with his sister and mother. A lot of new ground still waiting to be broken here.

Collin’s especially likes that .50cal barrel; flaming hot and hard as steel. Couldn’t believe Audie died in a plane crash. Not fair.

Their idea of the 21st century must be the end of civilization as there will be no more men from men sleeping with men.
