Hillary Clinton, Chris Christie Get Nods From Voters In 2016 Presidential Race, Poll Shows

If it were up to voters, the 2016 presidential race would be a battle between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Gov. Chris Christie, according to a poll released by Kean University today.

According to the poll, 67 percent of Democratic voters said they would support Clinton — the former First Lady, U.S. Senator from New York and Secretary of State — for president. Vice President Joe Biden finished a distant second

There's a sense that the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination is Hillary Clinton's for the asking," Terry Golway, director of the Kean University Center for History, Politics, and Policy, said in a statement. "This poll of New Jersey Democrats certainly confirms that thinking."

As for Republican voters, 41 percent said they'd support Christie for president. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida was second with 18 percent.

The poll also shows that Christie's approval rating at home continues to soar: 71 percent of the poll's 1,000 respondents said they either strongly approved or somewhat approved of his performance. Sixty-one percent of Democrats approve of the job he's done, as well as 66 percent of African-Americans, 61 percent of those who consider themselves liberals, and 72 percent of moderates.

In other poll questions:

• 58 percent either strongly approve or somewhat approve of President Barack Obama's performance.

• 56 percent said they support immigration reform leading to a path to citizenship.

• 82 percent favor criminal background checks before gun sales.

• 64 percent said they believe violent movies, television shows and video games contribute to violence in society.

• 74 percent said society is more violent today than it was 25 years ago.

The poll was conducted from April 25-29 and surveyed 1,000 likely voters in New Jersey. The margin of error was 3 percentage points.

Oh the famous Kean University poll. I’m sure the GOP will take that into account when choosing their nominee THREE YEARS from now.

The media is nuts.

Christie can enjoy the next couple of years, but he should think about the other Republican media darlings, McCain and Romney, before he for a moment thinks the press is really on his side.

"82 percent favor criminal background checks before gun sales. "

That's actually interesting -- because 100% of NJ gun sales require background checks and they have for years. It's encouraging if nearly 1/5 of NJ voters think NJ's onerous gun laws should be relaxed.

I don't think Christie will win the #1 spot on the Republican ticket in 2016. Maybe #2 but not #1.

I don't think Hillary's health will allow her to run in 2016. I wouldn't bet the farm, just a feeling. Look at her carefully when you see her on the TV screen.

“The poll...surveyed 1,000 likely voters in New Jersey”

Headline made no sense - then the details. There’s no way Christie will ever be the Republican nominee, New Jersey is not representative of the country.

The current mess keeps getting more hopeless. IS THIS ALL WE HAVE? Is this the best America can come up with? 2 loud mouths? I’m sorry to say that all we have to offer politically these days are wimpy candidates. The public is totally messed up, no one thinks anymore, and it seems no one even cares, its just a popularity contest between political stars with little substance. All we are producing are political finger pointers. What are these people thinking? An inept carpet bagger Senator from NY, who was a fk’d up Secretary of State, that has no real record of accomplishment, and they want her to run for President? What this country needs is a new burst of patriotism and to get off its knees and back to work. We need a winner not a proven loser or a bag of hot air.
