Why cant Obama defeat the GOP already?
Thats the question we keep hearing from pundits like the New York Times Maureen Dowd and National Journals Ron Fournier. They have pushed Obama to show more leadership and, somehow, overcome Republican opposition.
Whats really happening here, as the Daily Beasts Michael Tomasky writes, is that the Republican Party has departed from traditional norms of political behavior. He notes that the GOP has become a radical oppositionalist faction, way beyond the normal American parameters both in terms of ideology and tactics.
In other words, the GOP doesnt behave like a party shouldit isnt trying to govern, and it doesnt have a particular agenda. It opposes Barack Obamas presence in the White House, and will do anythingkill its own proposals, hold the economy hostageto damage his standing with the public.

Beyond 'normal' in ideology? Hardly. Unless you consider socialism to be the new normal.
Tactics? Where was this kind of caterwauling about obstructionist tactics when the Dems were the minority in the Senate?

This is hysterical. “Those mean Republicans just wont’ play fair!”
Like in the Senate, which has 55 Dems and voted down gun control 60-40.
The fool is so lost he is back to talking about global warming and Gitmo.
“Beyond ‘normal’ in ideology? Hardly. Unless you consider socialism to be the new normal.”
Here, while this whole time I thought the GOP was giving only token resistance to the Communists, I find out now that they’ve been some sort of radical extremist group.
I guess some words don’t mean what they use to mean.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Not that this is true, but there may be a kernel of reality to it. If there is, look to Obama for putting it there. As the old saying goes, ‘You reap what you sow’. Obama has been running around the country demonizing Republicans for going on five yrs. He lies about them. He shamelessly blames them for things he did. He pretends to bargain w them, only to sell them out at the last minute. When they object, he says, ‘I won’.
Eventually even RINOs [one wd hope] get tired of Obama’s high handed, dishonest & disgusting tactics. When they finally do, you get this inane editorial whining that perhaps the GOP isn’t willing to be Obama’s doormat indefinitely. Why never a line about Obama’s vile treatment of ‘the loyal opposition’ eventually wearing everyone’s nerves a little thin? (Okay, I know why; it was rhetorical.)
Enjoy your bitter harvest, Obama. You earned everything you’re getting, & a whole lot more.
I’ll take who is Tom Daschle for 100 Alex.
How do you bend a party to your will when it has decided that its only self-interested course of action is to deny you all cooperation at all costs? What you do is you establish a base of common ground first. After that, its pretty easy to get a few Republicans to go along with almost anything.
Of course, if you have spent four years announcing that there is no common ground and labeling sincere people liars, it is amazing how hard it can be to establish common ground . . .
Exactly. The Congress should become a rubber stamp like the Supreme Soviet, sentencing Kirov and Rykov and Kamenev to death on Dear Leader's sayso .... sending people away to Siberia for 10 years, on some Gaybist's sayso.
Repugnant drivel from diseased personalities.
The problem with these East Coast megalopolitans is that they stuck there in the big cities and never traveled west to learn about the real America. Instead, they've spent their whole lives in machine-political agar dishes, fuzzy and bespotted with criminality and power-need and corruption.
They wouldn't know what "clean" and "fair" and "straight" was, if it walked up and bit them on the ass. Instead they engage in these Seinfeldian disquisitions about the best way to get from Columbus Circle to Battery Park, and where to get good knishes at 2:00 a.m., and how to get a good deal on scrod at the Fulton Fish Market (hint: Ya gotta know somebody, or fugeddaboudit). Liberty? Who cares?
