Michelle Obama: Gun violence has children fearing death every day By Justin Sink - 05/03/13 12:56 PM ET

First lady Michelle Obama said that students at a high school just five miles from her family's Chicago home told her that “every day they wake up and wonder whether they’re going to make it out of school alive.”

In an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" that will air this weekend, the first lady said that when she met students after delivering a speech last month on gun violence, she was struck by the extent to which fear dominated the children's everyday lives.

“I mean, every single kid worries about their own death, or the death of someone, every single day,” Obama said.

The first lady traveled to her hometown to advocate for new gun controls ahead of the Senate's vote last month on a bill that would expand background checks on gun purchases. The vote fell five senators short of the 60 needed.

In the interview with CBS, Obama said that lawmakers have an "obligation to these kids" to try again.

“We have millions of kids living in these kinds of circumstances who are doing everything right,” Obama said. “And we, as a nation, have to embrace these kids and let them know that we hear them, and see them. One kid told me he felt like he lived in a cage, because he feels like his community is unseen, unheard and nobody cares about it."

Speaking in Mexico on Friday, President Obama said gun control would save lives on both sides of the border.

“Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,” Obama said. “I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms. And as president, I swore an oath to uphold that right, and I always will.”

“At the same time," Obama continued, "as I’ve said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It’s the right thing to do.”

In Chicago, virtually all of the murders take place in less than 10% of the city. And in 2011, 70% of murder VICTIMS had a criminal record.

Yes, it sucks to be an innocent person trapped in a very high crime area. Time to encourage the honest folks who live there to buy and use guns. In fact, I’d support a donation program...I’d give one of my guns to a family there for free, if they will escort their kids to and from school while armed.

Oh wait. Most blacks living in very high crime areas hate guns and don’t want to own them. They support Obama’s attempts to eventually take guns away from honest folks.

Sorry, then - you suckers are on your own!

Shame on you MOOOShal. The kids I know are not worried about guns at all. They seem to be more interested in candy and playing hide and seek. The real danger to kids is LIBERALS indoctrinating them in school and LIBERALS trying to take control of raising our kids away from parents, destroy Christianity (while coddling most other religions). GO away, not everyone wants to live your perverted lifestyle.

Once you try to use more laws to keep people from violating “thou shall not murder”, you’re heading down a death spiral.

More children face death from “Mommy’s New Boyfriend” than from guns.

“every day they wake up and wonder whether they’re going to make it out of school alive.”

The chances of any particular K-12 school in the United States experiencing a shooting incident in any given year is approximately 1 in 53,925. The odds of actually getting killed at school is very small.

Chicago public schools have a 40% dropout rate. The 60% that do graduate do not measure up to high school students in Europe and Asia.

Chicago kids are about 20,000 times more likely to drop out of school than experience a school shooting. What is Obama’s education solution?

1. Deny school choice that would allow kids to get better educated at safer schools. School choice would be liberating for millions, but it would be a transfer of power from the government. Democrats do not support any programs that lessen government power. (This is why Democrats are comfortable with communist and Nazi power, even as they blame such influences on conservatives. Liberals love government control)

2. Push for higher teacher salaries. Keep in mind that your children’s teachers might suddenly decide to start teaching your kids if they only had another 5 to 10 thousand dollar raise. (As long as the teachers are government employees and paying union dues, Democrats will support more of it)

3. More school administrators so they can prepare reports for the federal government and bully local schools and parents. (Again, more money and influence for Democrats)

4. Take over the student loan program. Debt is a form of slavery. If they government controls the student loan debt, they become the masters of all college bound kids.

5. Deny and/or bully schools into not allowing self defense. Again, the government is the master and you are their subjects.

6. Denounce home schooling even though home schooled kids have the highest college entrance scores and the most well mannered. The problem is that it challenges the liberal power-base of money and influence.

7. Push for new math that doesn’t require thinking.

New history that blames the worlds problems on western civilization and the US in particular.

New literature that no longer asks the kids to read classics. Before high school, they don’t even read entire books. They must read passages in groups of 4 to 6 people. Much of the literature revolves around racism, sexism, or the evils of capitalism.

Homework is hardly required before high school.

The problems with the schools go on and on. Liberals try to trap everyone in the system. Yes, there are pockets of excellence but that is usually because a teacher is going against the system and decided to teach.

The Obamas, each raised in a 'rarefied' United States, fail to see a Whole United States, they only see this nation as South-side Chicago and 'politics' as the infamous Chicago Machine...only as 'first family' have their eyes been opened to the real United States and precious little has registered other than their ingrained views. Plus Ill. has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation and they don't work!

My wife learned to safely shoot and maintain military handguns and rifles during high school PE class. It was required for all.

Well, “criminal” is an easy state to define, since courts and judges and all are involved (due process).

But now we have a new, non-due-process category of people, “dangerous”.

So when 0bama wants to stop “criminals and dangerous people”, we need a pretty strict definition of what “dangerous” is exactly.

I suspect we are going to see a Federal law mandating that someone who wishes to own “a” firearm for “lawful purposes” is going to have to pass a “dangerousness test” that will include at least a physical and mental examination that will be strict enough that the physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers and an advocate or two (paid for by the firearms owner) won’t be liable if anything bad happens. If it saves only one life, it will be commonsense and reasonable, for the children.

“I mean, every single kid worries about their own death, or the death of someone, every single day,” Obama said.

Every last one. Every day. Yeah. Like not a one is worried about algebra, how to afford the next big video game, whether that guy got her pregnant last night, or who will be t the party tonight??

Well, at least we can stop fretting over hunger or childhood obesity now! If you are hungry you won’t worry as much about all those guns, and if you know you are the fattest one on the playground, and will thus be shot first, you will watch what your eat more, just to increase your chance of survival!

So worrying about guns is better than sitting around starving or overeating!
