A late friend of mine, a WW II combat Marine and PH awardee, had an abdominal blunt force injury. He had been hit with a jeep during a fight in the Philippines. It had landed on him. That injury didn't get him the PH, but it was what gave him the most trouble in later life.

I can't speak to Massachusetts law, but in many jurisdictions, the felony murder rule does not apply to the death of a co-conspirator.
