(Reuters) - It's been dubbed the most expensive prison on Earth and President Barack Obama cited the cost this week as one of many reasons to shut down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, which burns through some $900,000 per prisoner annually.

The Pentagon estimates it spends about $150 million each year to operate the prison and military court system at the U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, which was set up 11 years ago to house foreign terrorism suspects. With 166 inmates currently in custody, that amounts to an annual cost of $903,614 per prisoner.

By comparison, super-maximum security prisons in the United States spend about $60,000 to $70,000 at most to house their inmates, analysts say. And the average cost across all federal prisons is about $30,000, they say.

Barry doesn't mind giving hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars to muslims who hate us but he's opposed to spending that same amount on imprisoning them.

All Gov
April 8, 2013

Despite his 2008 campaign promise to close the U.S. government’s detention center for suspected terrorists at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, President Barack Obama’s administration last week announced plans to spend $ 195 million on renovation and new construction there—strongly implying that the nation’s taxpayers can expect to pay to imprison the center’s 166 inmates, 86 of whom have been cleared of wrongdoing, for many years to come.

Initially, on Wednesday, General John F. Kelly, Commander of the U.S. Southern Command, requested $ 150 million to $ 170 million for renovations to the prison complex, including $ 99 million for two barracks facilities, $ 12 million for a new mess hall, and millions more for consolidating scattered legal, medical and communications facilities. He also made a cryptic reference to “other projects that I couldn’t talk about here in the open but do have to do with replacing one of the camp facilities where some of the detainees are—special detainees are housed.”

I would like to see a break-out of the $900.000 per inmate. Just how is being spent!

Or if it really is.

Barry wants it closed. It would be completely consistent with leftist media policy to not just endorse but make a conscience effort to assist in his quest to attain that goal.

Also, since equivalent infrastructure does not exist in CONUS, you must compare the cost of building the new super-super-max and - oh, by the way - jump the NIMBY hurdle first.

Is Yucca Mountain still available?

I hear they are all on a hunger strike down there.

How bout we just lock the doors and leave them alone for 2 or 3 months and come back and see how they are doing?

Let’s rename it the “Holder Holding Center”. That will guarantee it funding for 50 years and a plaque (or plague) on the front door.

I guarantee that I could keep them securely imprisoned for less than $10,000 each per year.

Yeah, $150 million/year is outrageous, especially when for less than $200 we could solve the problem with 166 shots to the head. But...isn't it so hypocritical of Roto-Reuters to bitch and whine about $150 million, while ignoring the more than $1 trillion in porkulus dollars that were just pissed away? Or ignore the $89 billion/month the Treasury just prints in order to buy our own debt? Typical of the lick spittle media.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
