The Cautionary Instruction: Guns, research and politics
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | May 3, 2013 | Matt Mangino

For all the attention that is placed on the nation’s estimated 300 million firearms, most guns rest in cases, drawers and safes. Few are holstered. Few get used to actually stop a threat. Even armed soldiers and police officers often go entire careers without firing a shot on duty, reported the St. Louis Dispatch.

For many, self-defense is the leading argument for gun ownership rights. It’s also the primary motivation for keeping a firearm, now surpassing even hunting, according to a recent Pew survey.

Data on the incidents of guns’ being used in self-defense vary widely from study to study. But only a tiny sliver of people use guns to kill someone engaged in a felony. The FBI counted just 230 such cases of justifiable homicide in 2010. ...

Clear nylon and most folks fade over the horizon, just a-holes and elbows. No dusty ammo need be burned.

Why do we let clown reporter limit the data to “felons shot and killed during the commission of a crime”?

How about “number of crimes stopped or prevented due to the presence of a firearm”?

THAT is the data relevant to the discussion at hand!

Only time I've been forced to pull a trigger recently was real rattlesnakes (not politicians) and ratshot at a feral dog. I don't think I actually hit the dog. He left anyway.

The snakes, however were dead when I was done.

I've got enough snakeshot in one pair of steel-toed boots to reload at least one round.

They always show up right at your feet when you are talking to a man about a horse.

Most of the time they’re used in self defense no shots are fired so this argument on ‘killing’ someone in self defense is a moot point.
Extensive research has been done (by liberals no less) & the number is between 2.1 = 2.5 million times per year they are used in self defense..
Again, with no shots fired & no blood spilled in most cases.

The vast majority of people shot with a handgun live to tell the tail, too.

Another opinion piece from yet another bigmouth who apparently can’t read the constitution and who has failed to comprehend that opinions are like *ssholes - everybody has one and they all smell the same.

if most pistols stay in in their holsters, then the police and people like the Secret Service wouldn’t mind giving up their pistols first, right?

I’ve used my gun to stop a crime more often than I’ve used a fire extinguisher to put out a fire.

I’ve never used my life insurance policy. I think I’ll cancel it then start a campaign to ban life insurance.

That’s fine when you’re talking about people....

But down here Pit Bulls are more common than sunglasses at the beach!

Last time I went to view a piece of property the wife and I took our four-year-old. Little did we know the place would be flanked on three sides by snarling, eighty+ pound, “pets!”

Ten rounds my a$$!

So, then why do the police insist on carrying ARs and subguns?
